Don't open any emails unless they are trusted by you.
Don't open any links you don't know about.
Change all passwords. Turn your computer off when not in use, not just on standby.

So, the bottom line is......let's be careful out there!!!

Re: Another Virus

who knows what it will do on april the 1st but it is designed to morph on this day to be undetectable again. The boffins think that it wont destroy your computer as it is targeted to steal identity info. this is the new drug barons favourite way of making money cheap to service and estimates are 10 million computers infected.

Re: Another Virus

you have to be infected though for it to happen to you.

Fox doing scaremongering in my opinion because the major virus companies have known about this for a long time so those with protection should be protected already.

Re: Another Virus

No. sorry but symantec does not agree neither

Symantec article that says -If you’re worried about the Conficker worm striking on April 1st, don’t be.

Conficker, also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido, is a computer worm that surfaced in October 2008

Three main variants of the Conficker worm are known and have been dubbed Conficker A, B and C.

They were discovered 21 November 2008, 29 December 2008 and 4 March 2009, respectively.

Re: Another Virus

Snopes has something on this as well here snopes.com: Conficker

Seems that it's a well known virus and they've hopefully prevented the worst of it happening.

Re: Another Virus

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced today(MARCH 30) the release of a DHS-developed detection tool that can be used by the federal government, commercial vendors, state and local governments, and critical infrastructure owners and operators to scan their networks for the Conficker/Downadup computer worm.DHS: DHS Releases Conficker/Downadup Computer Worm Detection Tool

As a final safety note, all users -- whether they're worried about an infection or know for sure they're clean -- are also wise to make a full data backup today.

What won't work? Turning your PC off tonight and back on on April 2 will not protect you from the worm (sorry to the dozens of people who wrote me asking if this would do the trick). Changing the date on your PC will likely have no helpful effect, either. And yes, Macs are immune this time out.
