shocking story in the turkish press

EVRENSEL

-- 362 years for 1-lira extortion

A prosecutor in the southeastern Anatolian province of Diyarbakır demanded 362 years imprisonment for four teenagers who were accused of extorting 1 Turkish Lira from two other minors, the daily Evrensel reported Friday. Youths aged between 14 and 15 allegedly blocked the way of another four children on the street, whose ages range between 13 and 15 and allegedly demanded one lira on Feb. 18. They proceeded to fight the passing children before seizing the money. The minors attacked in the melee went to police and reported the incident. The hospital concluded that two of the child victims had no bruises or marks of violence while the other two had slight injuries. Police proceeded to detain three youths, two of whom were released pending trial, but the third one, E.M., who allegedly seized the lira, was arrested, where he remains. The victims withdrew their complaints, but the case has proceeded. Although the prosecutor in the case said in the indictment that one of the minor defendants had no capacity to understand the consequences of his acts, another prosecutor asked for 88 years in prison for the teenager. Four of the defendant children are accused of looting in collaboration with others, along with other crimes. Prosecutors demanded prison sentences ranging between 152 and 362 years for the suspects.

Can this be right? Minors in Turkey can recieve long prison sentences for stealing a lira? lol, in the U.K they might get community service for stealing a car!

Re: shocking story in the turkish press

i believe a few years ago there was lots of hand bag grabbing going on in Turkish resorts and the courts handed out sentences out of proportion to caught offenders and it is now an almost unheard of crime!

maybe the courts are giving the 'muggers' a fright, just like they gave the victims?

Re: shocking story in the turkish press

Reading the news I cant help thinking what an absolute sham the Turkish court system is ..... I'm all for punishing any offenders when they do wrong... but come on let the punishment reflect the crime......

I cant get my head around the fact that the courts seem to find the sentence acceptable for this kind of crime (yes I agree theft is theft no matter the amount) but 362 yrs.....

what about all the Killings that have been committed in the name of 'Honor' and the petty sentences the Men/Family get for these crimes.... in most cases all the Men get a pat on the back with hardly any sentence passed .... whats up with some court passing a sentence of 362yrs for an 'Honor Killing' that would surley act as a deterrent to these so called family members who commit the crimes.... they may start to think twice before pouring fuel and setting light to some poor defenseless woman...

Re: shocking story in the turkish press

Absolutely agree Debbie. 362 years for young boys is stupid. I don't agree with what they have done but compared to other crimes like you have mentioned this is absolutely ridiculous. The boys must be mortified.
