Re: Bosphorus Bypass

i think its just a headline grabber...dont forget the election is coming up
if it does come to fruition and istanbul becomes two(in about 2023 is the given date)..i wonder if the name Constantinoble or even Byzantium will be given to the new city.
ah well we can but wait and see.

PM Erdošan announces new water passage for Istanbul - Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review

It looks from this plan as if he's attempting to make the European side an Island! Is he hoping to re-shape the continents with this plan I wonder

In theory it's a good idea- to keep the freight ships out of the Bosphorus, but I don't think it can/will be developed, as Shirely said - a headline grabber probably.

Re: Bosphorus Bypass

This could be interesting. There are a number of international agreements about free passage through the Bosphorous to the Black Sea. I wonder what would happen if they banned traffic through the natural straits and redirected it through the canal and then charged a toll for the use of the canal.

It will be huge nature massacre I hope this project and 3. bridge project will be canceled. These two projects is located on Istanbul's water reserves and forests. It is a big demolition

"Navigation treaty raises doubts over PM's Istanbul Canal"

Navigation treaty raises doubts over PM's Istanbul Canal - Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review

I thought so...

The proposal will likely launch a new international debate over the implementation of the Montreux Treaty, a key and much-discussed document that allows ships from Black Sea coastal countries to navigate freely through the Turkish straits.

Russia urges Turkey to preserve Montreux Treaty - Hurriyet Daily News and Economic Review

Why don't they have the answers? Is it either because RTE hasn't thought the whole thing through properly and that it is just a campaign tactic, or that he's actually trying to hide the real agenda for the canal?

More to think about....

Re: Bosphorus Bypass

We should start a thread about mad election promises by Turkish candidates, it would be a real work of fiction.

Maybe as mad as all the Liberal Democrat candidates signing a National Union of Students pledge to abolish tuition fees before the election in May.
