Shark attack!

UUrrgghhh....gruesome! How brave were the surfers who swam over to rescue/recover him?

--------

A Frenchman has been killed in a horrific shark attack while surfing near the tropical island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean.
31-year-old Eddy Auber was surfing less than 200 metres from the west shore of Ti Boucan when he was reportedly attacked by at least two sharks.

Eye witnesses reportedly told police that they heard the young man scream and saw him wave his arms before he disappeared under the water. Rescue attempts were foiled as 'several shark fins' reportedly encircled the victim.

Three surfers managed to eventually swim over to Auber and drag his body back to the beach, where emergency services had arrived in the meantime. Paramedics at the scene were unable to revive the Frenchman who died from severe bite injuries, according to police.

“His right arm had been bitten off and one of his legs was completely ripped apart,” said the local Gendarmerie commander in an official statement.

This is the second reported shark attack on the island since the beginning of the year. A tourist lost his leg in February after being attacked by a shark off the Saint-Gilles beach.

Oh dear! what a sad viewpoint you have of nature. Its a good thing all people dont share your narrow minded view. Sharks are wonderful creatures that have been around for millions of years. But hey when theyre all gone we can always look at pictures of them. The day sharks sprout legs and start attacking people on land is the day i will worry. We invade there territory NOT the other way round. Rant over. Have a nice day

Re: Shark attack!

There's more chance of dying in a car accident (or plane accident) than to be eaten by a shark off the coast of Turkey.
Think of the millions of people who swim every year off the coast of Turkey - shark attacks are not simply rare, they're unheard of.

I went diving yesterday, saw an amazing battery of Barracuda - but no sharks. I doubt there have been many sightings of sharks in Turkey, I only know of 1 or 2 and they weren't jaws encounters.

Swim easy Funlife (or take up diving!)

when i,m swimming or jumping off the top deck of a boat trip sharks never enter my head .. however jelly fish do! they scare me more.... i think there was a programme a while ago on jellyfish and there is more threat from them than sharks .

Charlotte
Charlotte, There are sharks all around the Bodrum area and indeed a protected breeding ground for nurse sharks just off Yalikavak.
It's not well advertised obviously because of the fear and ignorance most people have about sharks and it may put people of swimming.
These sharks have NEVER been known to attack anyone and are far more fearfull of us than we should be of them.

ps. It's the land based sharks in Turkey that we should be more fearfull of.

Re: Shark attack!

UKizook,

I'm aware there are sharks in the Aegean and Med, my point is it's very unlikely you will ever see them - even at 30 metres, even off the coast of Bodrum.

How many dive centres are there in the Bodrum area? How many divers ever see sharks around the Turkish coast? My friend has been diving these waters for 20 years, and even though there are sharks, has never seen one.

If you don't see them, how likely is it you'll feel them?

As you say, there are more dangers on land than in the water.
