Can't agree Philip.

My lack of in-depth knowlege of NI politics does not detract from the fact that this individual seems incapable of doing his job impartially in a city where that is paramount.

I couldn'd give a toss which side he represents - he cannot now represent the whole city in question.

He should stand down.

Do you feel he should continue in post?

Re: Northern Ireland - One step forward, two steps back. Very sad.

Lol

You aint got a clue!!!

Lets start with a few basics

In Belfast in excess of 90% of public housing is segragated. This means the vast majority live seperately. We have seperate homes, schools, taxis, bars etc etc even graveyards. All of this seperated from each side by a now 7 metre wall Berlin style wall which is now even bigger than pre the so called agreement.

Politicians play to their own camps with many unionist ones refusing to take anything to with anything remotely Catholic let alone Republican and many on the Republican side uneasy with anything seen as pro British.
Welcome to real life Belfast not the "everythings sorted" tosh you read in your papers

Re: Northern Ireland - One step forward, two steps back. Very sad.

If, as reported, these awards have been presented by the incumbent mayor for two decades - then he has shown that he cannot fullfill the whole role.
As the representative of a city where so many have given so much to try and build a peaceful future - he should be ashamed.
He has sent a powerful message to the people of this community - actions can speak louder than words.

Having spent time there over a period of years, I have been proud to call a number of people from differing backgrounds friends - the young people today need a positive outlet for their energies and the DOE scheme gives that along with much else.

What a shame for Belfast.

Philip,

Nothing you have said answers the question of whether this guy has what it takes to carry the post of Belfast Mayor in 2011.

In my opinion, it is patently obvious that he does not.

The party he represents is the biggest in both main cities and tipped to become the biggest single party. Take what you want out of that

Re: Northern Ireland - One step forward, two steps back. Very sad.

I thought the post of Mayor was supposed to be non-partisan.

As I said, I am not interested in which side of the fence he is from.

He has shown by this bad mis-judgement, that he cannot fulfill the demands of the job.

He should therefore resign.
