I have nothing to hide so why bother!

Those grocery store "loyalty cards" that they push on you to enjoy discounts on groceries are actually a behavior surveillance technology that's used to capture and profile your grocery purchasing patterns. This data is then sold off to insurance companies who use it to raise your rates by linking your grocery purchases with the risk of disease.

So what you may ask...........

They can use this data to deny your health insurance claims. For example, if you get diagnosed with cancer, your health insurance company can look through your grocery purchasing history and show that you bought processed meat products containing cancer-causing additives. They can use this data to deny payment on your claims and push the blame on YOU for living a "cancer lifestyle." Employers could use the info and decide you are a heart attack risk and deny you employment.

And this is the solution for everyone: Fill out the cards if you want, but use false names.

Of course that which you purchase could not be reasonably inferred to as that whch you use.

Cat and dog food for instance.

Vegetarians who purchase meat for their non veg families.

No , far too tenuous , not gonna run.

I very much doubt that an insurance company could legally use the excuse you qouted to deny a claim.!
however you are being monitered all the time by mobile phones, credit cards and various other things

Re: I have nothing to hide so why bother!

The Wall street journal quote it as fact.....

Quote:
"Marketing firms have sold this data to retailers and credit-card companies for years, and health plans have recently discovered they can use it to augment claims data," reports the Wall Street Journal.
Quote:
The thing is, when they aggregate your purchase data, they can easily determine all sorts of very private things about your life. They know whether you have pets or children. They even know very private, personal things like when you purchase a pregnancy test kit or the fact that you're using hair coloring products. They know which brands you prefer, how many coupons you use, and even when you're planning a party.

All this information can and will be used to target you with not just marketing messages, but potentially to raise your insurance rates or even fire you from your job because you're a "heart attack risk." Yep, just wait for your employer to get their hands on all this information. It has already begun, in fact. As the Wall Street Journal report:
Your choice what you believe but just look at the claims that are refused with feeble excuses for house insurance and travel insurance, they will use any trick in the book to avoid paying out.

Buying a half ounce of gold every week is good insurance, too.

Re: I have nothing to hide so why bother!

Juco , you are talking about a newpaper report about the US , the UK supermarkets do use the data in this way , it is illegal.

If i bought one , how would they know who the pregnancy kit was for ?

A wife , daughter , girlfriend , charitable pregnancy advisory service ?

I used to buy my Dad Brandy , can't stand the stuff myself.

Far too nebulous to profile too deeply.

In the UK a company cannot just sack you because your profile in a supermarket is questionable.

Best go the Pistorious way , keep a handgun by the bed just in case the " supermarketbogeyman " comes a calling.

Steve.
