Politicians IMO Steve had such a long leash for years........then came the internet, FOI Act(s), Transparency International etc. Back in the day, reports hit the Sundays five days after the event. Now its instant & not forgotten because there are daily updates.
Society calls people who are pissed off & want change populists. Whats forgotten along the way are pledges & promises politicians made to get the people to vote for them.
Because this thread is about Ukraine, what was it that the now President offered the people that made them vote for him, EU membership & or sorting out the corruption? EU membership is/was beyond him because of the long slow process BUT corruption within his own borders is something else.......That was his job, his target & he's failed because he was//is part of it.
If politicians have any savvy at all, they themselves should know that this day & age, there's just no hiding place.........their dirt, if any, is waiting to surface.

Russia plans more assault ships amid rising tensions with Ukraine

The Russian navy is accelerating plans to build more amphibious assault warships, according to a leading supplier of vessels to the Kremlin, amid reports that Moscow has blockaded Ukrainian ports near the annexed Crimea peninsula…

Rather obvious why Russia wanted those French Mistrals – let’s hope US shore to ship missiles get here before the Russian assault ships.

U.S. military carries out Open Skies flight over Ukraine

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Thursday it carried out an “extraordinary” flight over Ukraine under the Open Skies Treaty to reaffirm its commitment to the country after Russia seized three Ukrainian naval vessels off Crimea.

“Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukrainian naval vessels in the Black Sea near the Kerch Strait is a dangerous escalation in a pattern of increasingly provocative and threatening activity,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

“The United States seeks a better relationship with Russia, but this cannot happen while its unlawful and destabilizing actions continue in Ukraine and elsewhere.”

Foreign policy experts say West still doing too little about Russia’s Azov Sea aggression

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Foreign policy experts who gathered at the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 5 criticized the West for a weak response to Moscow’s attack on Nov. 25, when Russian ships opened fire on three Ukrainian vessels in the Kerch Strait and then seized boats and 24 sailors…

The violent episode was the first time that regular Russian forces had openly attacked Ukraine, although Russian forces have been in Ukraine from the start of the Kremlin’s war in 2014…

All the speakers lamented the lack of biting penalties on Russia…

Celeste Wallander, president of the US-Russia Foundation think tank, said that although Moscow had long ago demonstrated it was ready to use violence to further its foreign policy aims, the Russian aggression at sea on Nov. 25 had taken Moscow into a “new dangerous and unpredictable” scenario, as it marked the first time the Kremlin had used maritime military force.

She said that, throughout the conflict the Kremlin has “tactically won” because responses and sanctions had always been slow in coming.

She said the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin’s kleptocratic elite fear that if democracy and prosperity take root in Ukraine it will become difficult for them to maintain their regime. But she said any further sanctions should be carefully crafted to “distinguish between Russian national interests and Putin’s Kremlin feeding its corrupt needs.”

A former U.S. ambassador, Daniel Fried, echoed some of Wallander’s views. He said that Putin will eventually lose, but sanctions and responses must be calculated to inflict pain on the Russian dictator and his cronies rather than ordinary Russians.

Russians Will Celebrate Return of Crimea to Ukraine If Putin Tells Them To

The possibility that Vladimir Putin will return two or more of the Kurile Islands the Soviet Union seized at the end of World War II in exchange for a peace treaty with Japan has an important lesson for the world about Crimea: Russians will celebrate its return to Ukraine if Putin or his successor in the Kremlin tells them to…
