Re: Ukraine riots.

Parliament lifts lawmakers’ immunity from prosecution…

The Ukrainian parliament has lifted lawmakers’ immunity from prosecution, implementing a groundbreaking constitutional change that has been promised for over two decades…

Corrupt lawmakers have often abused immunity to escape punishment for crimes they committed. Previously, to prosecute a lawmaker, the authorities first needed to receive parliament’s permission and lawmakers had to vote to lift their colleague’s immunity.

Finally, at long last another remnant of Soviet corruption out the window

But what’s the point of being a law maker if you can’t evade criminal prosecution?

Re: Ukraine riots.

Q&A: What Does the Prisoner Swap Mean for Ukrainian-Russian Relations?

"..It’s important to recognize that the exchange is completely unbalanced: all Russian prisoners held by Ukraine were guilty of serious offenses according to the laws of any democratic, rule-of-law nation; all Ukrainians were only held as prisoners on the basis of scandalous and preposterous fake or trumped-up charges according to the same criteria. This point should be stressed more clearly in media reporting.

It is far from certain yet that the exchange will mean something positive for Russia's approach to the war in the Donbas (and Crimea). Unless of course their adventure there is getting too costly to bear, about which we know still next to nothing…

...Ukraine apparently tried to hold off exchanging Volodymyr Tsemakh, who commanded an air defense unit involved in shooting down MH-17. But Russia insisted on his inclusion, threatening to pull down the agreement if he wasn’t part of the deal.

So while I totally understand the frustration of the MH-17 victims’ families, I’m thrilled for the Ukrainian families who were reunited today with their loved ones. At the end of the day, we all know who was responsible for the downing of MH-17: Russia…

It's a despicable act by any government anywhere, to hold hostages to try to influence a deal.

No deal suggested Leslie – just a straight exchange of Ukrainian civilians for Russian terrorists & military.

No softening of the war either – August was the bloodiest month this year

It is indeed good news that 35 innocents have been released by Russia but let's not forget
that there are still 200+ in captivity in the occupied territories alone…

Zelensky on attempts to lift Russia sanctions...

“Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has turned to international partners who are considering lifting economic restrictions earlier imposed on the Russian Federation over aggression in Ukraine: "You are losing money. We are losing people!"

"I won't get tired of repeating to all our foreign partners who have been helping us (for which I'm very grateful) but who sometimes consider lifting sanctions: 'You're losing money, seriously? Sorry, we're losing people," Zelensky said during the 16th annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy (YES) in Kyiv, an UNIAN correspondent reports…

How Zelensky can triumph in his meeting with Trump

Ze2.jpg

(CNN)When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky greets United States President Donald Trump Wednesday in their first face-to-face meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the TV comedian-turned-politician must be wary and avoid being taken advantage of by the self-proclaimed master of the art of the deal.

At the same time, Zelensky must be circumspect and consider how Russian President Vladimir Putin might try to capitalize on Ukraine's being increasingly -- and unfairly -- portrayed as a cesspool of corruption.

The Trump-Zelensky meeting comes amid slipping support for Ukraine among Republican elected officials, at a time when Zelensky is deep in a high-stakes effort to bring Putin to the bargaining table. This diplomacy is part of an ambitious effort by Zelensky to make good on an election promise to end the deadly five-year military conflict with Russia in the east of the country.

Zelensky made that pledge on the premise he could count on the full security backing of the United States.

But that assumption is now at risk of falling apart for one main reason: Donald Trump…

Thousands rally to warn against capitulating to Russia

ukraine.jpg

As many as 10,000 people rallied in central Kyiv on Oct. 6 to warn Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky against capitulating to Russia in a bid to end the Kremlin’s six-year war against Ukraine, which has led to the loss of 7 percent of the nation’s territory now under the Kremlin’s control. Those include portions of the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts and the Crimean peninsula.

Ukraine agreed to implement the Steinmeier Formula, named after German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Under the idea, Kremlin-controlled areas of the eastern Donbas would have elections and enjoy a degree of local autonomy, as long as Russian military forces are withdrawn, Ukraine regains control of its eastern border with Russia and elections are held under Ukrainian law and judged to be free and fair by international observers, particularly the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

There are huge concerns that such elections and local autonomy will legitimize the Kremlin’s land grab and war, which has cost the lives of 13,000 Ukrainians while creating enclaves that will work against Ukrainian interests…
