British terror suspects can be stripped of their citizenship

The Home Secretary has announced a last-minute change to the Immigration Bill so British terror suspects can be stripped of their citizenship, even if it leaves them stateless.

It comes as the Government faces a significant backbench rebellion later as Conservative MPs call for tougher measures in the new legislation.

Theresa May has tabled an amendment which will allow the removal of a UK passport from any person whose conduct is deemed "seriously prejudicial to the vital interests of the UK".

The Home Secretary already has the power to take away British citizenship from those with dual nationality.

But this change would allow her to make people stateless if they have been naturalised as a British citizen.

Immigration Bill: Govt Braced For Rebellion

-----------------------------------------------------------

I am unsure of this because I agree in principle for the removal but it has far reaching implications.

Re: British terror suspects can be stripped of their citizenship

I canít see that this would leave them stateless. If they left, say, Libya, on a Libyan passport then they still have Libyan statehood.

Laws in other developed countries can be much more onerous. I donít know if it is still on statute but many years ago my Singapore passport was withdrawn because I had left the country for more than 6 (12?) months without notifying the authorities.

On the other hand I donít think itís right that terrorists should be deprived of citizenship Ė they should be shot!

Re: British terror suspects can be stripped of their citizenship

However Libya ( forinstance ) could legally refuse to re admit the person as they legally held stateship in the country trying to extradite him. They therefore have no right to enter. Libya could find it much easier to deny stateship then the UK.

Such states are told that airlines carrying stateless ( within their jurisdiction ) persons must not allow such to travel. The penalties for airlines can be in the millions.

Good story for rabid , right wing tory fascists , but the Lords will have their say , then the courts , then the appeal courts , then the euro courts , then the International court of....

Posh Dave , Nicky the Fag and Mdme Theresa wil be long dead.

As a right wing Tory fascist I say who cares. Get rid ASAP one way or another at the least cost to us. On the other hand I am sure our bleeding heart, PC, tree hugging, human right loving socialist friends would far sooner give them a nice home with a lifetime of benefits.

Not me Des , however the law is the law and those foot on the back of the neck , honest toil worker exploiting right wing robber barons will waste time and taxpayers hard earned money fighting a lost cause , that will not progress through parliament.

Those that are here illegally must be deported , much better to man up the border and immigration services and spend money stopping it getting that far.

And make them more efficient! Two years ago I wanted to take my Ukrainian wife (who has never even had a parking ticket) to meet my failing mother in UK. Took them 12 months to issue a visa and mum died just three days after we got there.

Condolences Jaycey , our border agencies have a lot to answer for , particularly those who mis administer them.

Re: British terror suspects can be stripped of their citizenship

Our border agencies need to have the shackles of human, political and religious rights removed. Not supposed to be here then go away. Abuse your awarded UK passport then have it taken back.

As they sometimes say "one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter".

I seem to remember a guy who died recently, Mandela I think his name was.
