Re: Should Ocalan be freed ?

The Kurdish people & the PKK have always been used for political gain. The PKK set up to fight for their cause to defend the rights of the Kurdish people - I am not saying it is right. The PKK put their lives on the line for what they believed in - Kurdish rights and freedom and when they left Turkey as part of the peace process I am sure they knew they were still putting their lives on the line for their beliefs and for peace for their people, I don't think they trusted AKP or any parties other than possibly Kurdish political parties. But for peace for Kurdish people they accepted the deal and I believe they knew the risks. Hopefully there will be peace.

RTE seems to think that he can get the Kurdish vote if he offers up Ocalans freedom. Most Kurds feel he should be free, most Turks think this is the unthinkable. The AKP do not have any concern about Ocalans interests...it's just votes they want and as history shows they will stop at nothing to get them. It wouldn't surprise me if it's soon announced that Ocalan's moving off his Island prison into a mainland prison with less isolation. RTE will dangle him like a carrot in the hope Kurds will follow him. I agree with Shirley that the issues on the borders of Turkey and the release of Ocalan are hard to separate.
Kurds are furious about what is allowed to happen in the border regions of Turkey and they would have shown that fury in the next elections. I don't think the possibility of Ocalans release will lessen the Kurdish anger. Personally i don't think it would change their vote, any trust in the AKP or RTE is dwindling fast. It's obvious to everyone in these areas that Turkey are supporting ISIS and actively helping them to attack the Kurdish population in Northern Syria. I think Kurdish voters will give priority to the border problems than to Ocalans release when voting.
