Russia: Talking war in times of economic crisis

When the sanctions hit Russia in 2014 and Moscow responded with a trade boycott, Irina found it funny that people started obsessing about the disappearance of gourmet cheese from stores.

The 32-year-old education researcher, who asked that only her first name be used, says she didn't feel the effect of the sanctions either in her everyday life, or in her cheese-buying habits.

The same year, as oil prices faced a dramatic fall, the rouble collapsed and an economic crisis hit Russia with full force.

Being a member of the Moscow middle class, Irina felt shielded from its effects as well, although she says she did have to limit her travelling abroad and cut down on luxury items…

US senators seek Russia sanctions over hacking, Ukraine, Syria

"WASHINGTON, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Senior U.S. Republican and Democratic senators will introduce legislation on Tuesday seeking to impose a wide range of sanctions on Russia over its cyber activities and actions in Syria and Ukraine.

The legislation is sponsored by Republican Senator John McCain and Democrats Ben Cardin and Robert Menendez, all influential legislators on foreign policy matters. Aides said several other senators, both Democrats and Republicans, are also expected to sponsor the legislation, increasing its chances of becoming law...

Donald Trump schedules first call with Vladimir Putin, Kremlin confirms

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will speak by telephone on Saturday, the Kremlin said, a first step towards what Trump has billed as a normalisation of relations after three years of tensions sparked by the conflict in Ukraine.

Trump will also have a telephone conversation the same day with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and that call is expected to focus on Russia, a source in Berlin familiar with the matter said.

Trump has said in the past that, as part of the rapprochement he is seeking with Russia, he is prepared to review the sanctions that Washington imposed on Russia over its 2014 annexation of Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula.

That move is likely to face resistance from both influential figures in Washington and foreign leaders - Merkel among them - who argue sanctions should only be eased if Moscow complies with the West's conditions on Ukraine.

White House Says Russia Sanctions Will Remain Until Crimea Returned to Ukraine

“U.S. Sanctions against Russia will remain in place until the Crimean peninsula is returned to Ukraine, the White House has announced.

Presidential Press Secretary Sean Spicer described the process of lifting sanctions as a “non-starter.”

“With respect to the sanctions that specifically deal with Ukraine and Crimea, I think that Ambassador Haley, [Washington's representative to the United Nations], has spoken very, very clearly about that,” Spicer told journalists on Wednesday. “Until Russia leaves Crimea, those sanctions are a non-starter.”…

On Maidan Anniversary, U.S. Must Offer Clarity

…“ Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine threaten to institutionalize a culture of flagrant human rights and international law violations. In Crimea, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and torture and cruel and inhuman treatment of residents frequently occur, and freedom of speech and association have notably diminished…

The Trump Administration must maintain the United States’ support for broad sanctions against the Russian Federation until Moscow meets the requirements for their repeal or reduction. Sanctions should be enforced until Russia restores full control of Crimea to the Ukrainian government, respects Ukrainian sovereignty in the region, pulls out of Crimea, consents to full monitoring of Crimea and eastern Ukraine by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and provides clear access for humanitarian aid to civilians. Moscow’s decision to accept civil registration documents from eastern Ukraine is a clear indication that Russia has not satisfied any of the requirements necessary to remove or reduce sanctions…

If the White House is truly mindful of U.S. national security, it will maintain current U.S. policy on sanctions and hold Russia accountable. If the United States fails to act, it will effectively condone boundary violations and gross human rights violations across a foreign border, signaling its approval to all international observers, including leaders in countries that wish the U.S. harm.

If it does not want to invite further aggression and rights devolution on the world stage, including threats against its allies or even itself, the United States must steadfastly maintain its support for accountability. In this case that means a clear and unequivocal statement that Russian sanctions will be removed if, and only if, Russia plays by the international rules.

I thought Trumps representative at the UN Security Council meeting made it clear, no deals with Russia & sanctions to remain.

Let's hope that Trump & his representatives are on the same page here.

Are you not looking for something that's not there? The representative was speaking for the US President, surely that's how it works at the UN?
