"Appallomine" - The shock/horror chemical in your brain

From Turkey File, a blog by a New Zealand prof in Istanbul. A blog well worth reading for a balanced view of Turkey

I?m Pretty Near Appalled Out! | Turkey File

Turkish neuro-scientists have identified a chemical in your brain that produces the "shock/horror" response. In the intermediate stage between seeing and understanding, chemicals produced in other parts of the brain modify the information receive before passing it on. Studies suggest that over-stimulation by excessive exposure to horrifying imagery can have the effect if inhibiting the production if "appalmine" , resulting in a reduce ability to be appalled.

Re: "Appallomine" - The shock/horror chemical in your brain

Could this, if true, explain why some people grow up with no sense of horror? They may have played or watched games/films for hours and become used to the horror etc displayed. The body can get used to so many feelings and perhaps this is why. So many awful killings etc going on. Maybe someone should investigate the perpetrators so find the cause of the lack of feeling and empathy that goes on?

ihutch, There has long been debate about too munch viewing of violent games, movies, TV having the effect of numbing the viewer, especially young viewers. Of course, the producers of these violent forms of entertainment have always denied that there is a connection. Now it does seem that he Turkish scientists have found that there is indeed a physical connection.

Whether the entertainment industry will take note is another story.

As you may have guessed, I made up the stuff about the ‘Appallomine’chemical in our brains – but everything else is true. And I actually do believe that our brains react that way to over-stimulus!

Sadly kingfisher this is the problem with many people, they tend to read a few lines but fail to read all, they then think of themselves as experts on the subject.

As for myself, I neither play games nor watch television so I am appalled!

Or even check the credentials of some of the dubious bloggers milling around on the net.

Either way, the article makes perfect sense as we are all not much more than a bundle of chemical reactions. I am glad so many people took the time to read the article to the end and please continue reading Turkey File for more insights.
