A face saving deal Jaycey. Do you really believe UK saying no to China would have stopped them just walking in whenever they wanted ?

Britain did'nt have much room for manoeuvre once the 99 year lease ended in 1997. So why do you think the British betrayed the citizens there?

I agree that Britain acted honouraby in acting in accordance with the treaty conditions & that there was no manoeuvring possible.

But surely holders of British passports should not be denied the possibility of entering and working in Britain?

Another issue we should & will keep out of. We have voiced concerns as have other countries, Hong Kong is part of China & that's it.

All well and good Spurs - but the question is " Did the Brits betray HK citizens in 1997?" on the passport issue.

Re: Hong Kong ‘Maidan’

For all those Hong Kong citizens who registered to become British Nationals Overseas prior to 1997 have the rights to hold a British passport, can get consular assistance and protection from UK diplomatic posts
However, they are subject to immigration controls and don’t have the automatic right to live or work in the UK and aren’t considered a UK national by the European Union (EU)
British citizenship.
But they may be able to register as a British citizen and meet certain conditions.

Britain after all is only a small island, with limited space, jobs and infrastructure.

Re: Hong Kong ‘Maidan’

If anything I would say its China who has let Hong Kong down. Could be a "here we go again", a business conflict.

A comment made this morning was that the UK because of aid cuts to Africa, are part responsible for the Ebola outbreak.

As long as we know!!!!
