When Britain and others decided to take no military action against Assad, he knew he could act with impunity.

In a brazen attack on humanity, Bashar al-Assad's regime allegedly launched a nerve gas attack on Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib province in Syria today. At the time of writing up to 58 people have been declared dead, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The distressing images coming out of northern Syria show the bodies of dead children piled on the back of pick-up trucks, their skin whitened as they died from asphyxiation. Following the attack, one of the hospitals treating patients suffering from exposure was bombed, just to make sure. This brazen attack should show the world how the Assad regime truly views its own people.

This is not the first time Assad has used nerve agents to exterminate his own people, the most well-known incident on August 23 2013 nearly brought the West to the brink of war with his regime.

So don't understand Philop when you said you were defending your Community (well isn't that Irish, which wasn't mentioned in any posts ) or maybe aligning yourself with the Palestinians (they also weren't mentioned in any posts ) nor was there a defence or support by anyone of the Zionist foreign policy in posts by myself or Akasya just condemenation of ASSAD ..... or maybe it was your Socialist credentials you were defending. Well if you had kept up with the current Socialist articles from your penthouse in Spain ..modern Socialist thinking allows you to criticize Assad and Russia and its atrocious role in Syria. p.s. and of course, you will get your "alt right" agreer's as they would like to see the left eat the left.

On the Palestinians you support Hamas, well the leader in Gaza has condemned the chemical attack............

The Palestinians’ Real Enemy: Bashar al-Assad

extracts ...
More than 450 Palestinians were tortured to death in Syrian prisons since the outbreak of that country’s civil war, with 1,100 others remaining in regime custody and thousands fleeing abroad.

The regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has not given families any information about the bodies of the 456 Palestinians killed while imprisoned, nor does it provide statistics about its detainees or grant the Red Cross access to the 1,100 prisoners.

More than 3,400 Palestinians have been killed over the course of the Syrian civil war, according to a report published by the Action Group For Palestinians of Syria. “[Nearly] 80,000 Palestinians have fled to Europe, while 31,000 fled to Lebanon, 17,000 to Jordan, 6,000 to Egypt, 8,000 to Turkey and 1,000 to the Gaza Strip,” the report added. Almost 200 Palestinians were said to have died of starvation or malnutrition due to sieges perpetrated by the Assad regime.

For a genuine anti-imperialism

January 4, 2017

PRO-ASSAD leftists, your analysis is wrong.

Extracts
To support Assad and Russian intervention in Syria is to support a completely brutal counterrevolution. The Syrian uprising, along with the whole Arab Spring, was a revolt against decades of neoliberal suffocation as well as against undemocratic tyrants.

Authoritarianism throughout the Middle East and North Africa has an intimate connection with imperialism and global capitalism. Syrians along with people across many other Arab states rose up for democracy. They had no other choice--economic desperation without any legitimate way to challenge the political establishment forced people's hands. The revolts and the people who participated in them were incredibly brave.

We should support and defend the Arab Spring revolutions against all counterrevolutionaries, including the imperialist states that circled them like vultures from day one, trying to influence their outcomes. This means supporting the Syrian revolution.

To the "leftist" admirers of Assad's Syria

January 3, 2017

Extracts
IS THIS "Syria of Assad"--where Iran and Russia act as they please, together as well as separately, and whose future now relies exclusively on their agreements and disagreements--independent and anti-imperialist? Let left-wing admirers of the Assad regime read the unconscionable treaty that it signed on August 26, 2015, granting Russia exorbitant privileges as well as complete and permanent immunity regarding all damages caused by its air force.

How can anyone seriously describe as "secular" a regime that, since its beginning and in order to perpetuate itself indefinitely, has striven to poison relations between religious communities, held Alawis and Christians hostage to its policies, presided over the contamination of Syrian society by the most obscurantist form of Salafism, and has manipulated all sorts of jihadists, and not only in Syria?

How "progressive" is it to promote the wildest type of capitalism, impoverishing and marginalizing millions of citizens who barely survive in the suburbs of the main cities? These impoverished Syrians were the main social component of the revolution, and they became the main target of the regime's heavy artillery, barrel bombs and chemical weapons. "Kill them to the last," demanded the Shabbiha (Assad's thugs) from the beginning of the uprising, so that the new "progressive" bourgeoisie could securely plunder the nation's wealth and pile up billions of dollars in fiscal paradises!

If the above is not enough, one can also remind Assad's "left-wing" supporters of the crimes against humanity perpetrated with complete impunity by Bashar's father, Hafez, during his 30 years of autocratic rule.

How can you justify the unjustifiable?

Extracts
BUT HOW could one fail to explode in anger when one reads statements in support of the regime of the Assads, father and son, issued by men and women who claim to stand on the left, and who should therefore sympathize with struggles for justice everywhere? How could one fail to become exasperated when one hears them praise the independence, secularism, progressive character, and even "socialism" of a lawless clan that took power in an army coup more than 45 years ago and whose only concern is to keep exerting power forever? "Assad forever," "Assad or nobody," "Assad or we burn the country," chant Assad's partisans. And his "leftist" supporters nod approvingly under the pretext that there is no other choice: It's either him or ISIS.

Syria using crematorium to hide executions, State Department says

The Syrian government has constructed and is using a crematorium inside its notorious Sednaya military prison outside Damascus to clandestinely dispose of thousands of prisoners it continues to execute inside the facility, according to the State Department.

At least 50 prisoners a day are executed in the prison, some in mass hangings, said Stuart Jones, the acting assistant secretary of state for the Middle East. A recent Amnesty International report called Sednaya a “human slaughterhouse” and said that thousands of Syrians have been abducted, detained and “exterminated” there.

Amnesty International has teamed up with Forensic Architecture, a research agency based at Goldsmiths, University of London, to recreate the horrors of Saydnaya, a Syrian torture prison near Damascus, through an interactive 3D model.

US-led coalition strikes pro-regime forces in Syria: official

The US-led coalition "destroyed" a unit of pro-regime forces in Syria on Tuesday as they advanced near an area where coalition commandos have been training and advising rebels, a military statement said.

A group of about 60 pro-regime soldiers moved into the area with a tank, artillery, anti-aircraft weapons and armed technical vehicles, posing a threat to the coalition forces at At-Tanf Garrison near the border with Jordan and Iraq, the coalition said in the statement.

"The coalition issued several warnings via the de-confliction line prior to destroying two artillery pieces, an anti-aircraft weapon, and damaging a tank," it said.

It was the second time in less than a month that coalition forces have attacked pro-regime forces as they headed toward the garrison.

Coalition planes on May 18 pounded the front of a convoy that had apparently been headed toward the At-Tanf garrison, in an established "deconfliction zone" northwest of the garrison.

Re: "Boots on the Ground" Syria

As Syria’s war enters its endgame, the risk of a US-Russia conflict escalates

Not for the first time there are dire warnings of a direct US-Russia confrontation in Syria that could escalate, in the worst case, into a third world war. What is going on has echoes of the proxy conflicts fought by the superpowers during the latter stages of the cold war, but with added elements of risk because the accepted rules and formal channels of communication to a large extent no longer exist.

The latest alarm sounded after US forces shot down a Syrian government warplane and Russia said it would in future treat any US plane flying west of the Euphrates as a potential target. Russia also announced that it was cutting the Russia-US hotline designed to prevent accidental clashes in the Syrian airspace. The US said it had acted in defence of opposition forces fighting Islamic State. Russia asked on what authority it was striking against the government of a foreign state…
