Re: Army Recruitment

Our officer class do very well Martin , we have 63 Admirals for 23 warships , more Admirals per ship and rating than any other comparable fleet afloat.

Still we should have one less after the Royal Yacht was decommissioned , it always had it's own personal Rear Admiral. Just in case i suppose.

Interesting pay rate chart. So a London Tube Driver, who just closes the doors acting as a glorified Guard, earns the same as a Lt Colonel.

On £50,000 then if a LT Colonel took a £20,000 to £30,000 paycut then yes.

Re: Army Recruitment

London transport tube drivers are extremely difficult to recruit. One must master the signalling system and the legal constraints that are placed on the drivers. When i worked for London Transport the training failure rate was extremely high as was the drop out rate during the first year.

The job is tedious , repetitive and boring , extremely unhealthy and a marriage breaker owing to the dreadful shift patterns. Many drivers leave due to the holiday schedule starting in april and ending in october , they want holidays with their kids during the school holidays.

There is the stress factor of approaching overcrowded platforms and wondering just who is going to be jumping under or being hit by getting too close.

Working on the tube is reckoned to be more dangerous than smoking 20 cigarettes a day and respiratory illness is endemic.

The medical for starting training is very stiff and many do not even pass that.

Not according to the links I have found

How well off are London's tube drivers and why are they striking?

Tube strike FAQ: myths busted and questions answered | UK news | The Guardian

A LT Colonel would be on £80,000 with a 40% non contributary pension after 22 years funded by the tax payer, I just asked how much the pension pot would need to be worth and as a rough guess at least £1 to 1.5 million.
Do the maths using today's figures

Retires aged 45 lives to 85 with a pension of £32,000 per year.

And remember an LT Colonel is little more than a second line manager at large company

So not really a comparison to be had.

Re: Army Recruitment

Wouldn't need a big army if we didn't go sticking our noses in places like Iraq, Libya and Afganistan . If we acted a bit more like Switzerland etc. and paid more attention to our own welfare at home, Then we would be able to have a half decent NHS for example.
The great British empire moved on years ago but the Imperial mentality lingers on.

Its called, "looking after our interests", the problem is those "interests" are actually owned by someone else.
