Re: North Korea

It’s just unfortunate that Moon’s popularity is on the wane due to opposition not wishing for reunification.

Imo a great leader doing a great & difficult job and he’s had no hesitation in putting his job on the line.

President Moon may be a relatively new leader, less than a year in office but has spent years pushing for a diplomatic solution to the 2 Korea's as the ex-presidents Moo Hyun COS and one of the engineers of the "Sunshine Policy", he also has a good a mediating background as a human rights lawyer.

Right from the start of his Presidency, and against the trend of the last President he proposed talks with Kim without restrictions saying any time " any place anywhere"

His diplomacy is evident in his handling of the two egos of Kim and Trump, he is the one who stayed cool during the confrontation days and antics between the blusterers, using clever flattery, in praising Trumps every move and also Kim's anytime they showed any glimmer of compromise.

The time must have been right when hearing Kim Un's speech were he said he was interested in sending NK athletes to the Seoul Olympics. Moon jumped at the opportunity of talks, the first between the two Korea's in two years he reinforced the initial contacts by suggesting they both march under a united flag and pushing the idea of a joint hockey team... He took further advantage of the meeting to suggest Kim should make an approach to the US administration. From that Kim asked SK to put a forward verbal invitation to an in the person meeting with Trump on his behalf. Which the SK delegation did as we saw.
So this coxing by flattery of both sides has worked for President Moon and still continues with Moons flattering praise of Trump's contribution with his usual Asian modesty...

The talks themselves a whole new ball game with the neocon Bolton on team who brought down the last "six side" talks with NK wanting him out the team... and then we have Kim love him or hate him has played a win-win blinder ... as he as his forebears always wanted an equal status one on one with a US president.
It will be a long drawn out affair, that's how all these types of issues go but its a start. A grateful start for those in the region more so than to us.
Anything is better than what was going on a few months back.

Re: North Korea

Good question Steve – that’s part of the equation that hasn’t been given much consideration.

Maybe Moon is hoping that reunification will bring the peninsular closer to the West while Kim is hoping for closer ties with China.

(But I really wish you hadn’t broached the subject, it’s complicated enough already )

Re: North Korea

Coming so soon after Xi and Trump and goodness knows whom else on Xi's whirlwind tour had a chinwag ( sic ) , a friend told me that the US State Dept is expecting Xi to eventually announce his invite to attend the Singapore sling ?

Mr Abe will stumble on the e mail soon , sounds a bit like a Chinese take away .

But can the Japanese stomach it ?

US hopeful Trump-Kim meet will go ahead

The Trump administration is hopeful its summit with North Korea will go ahead, despite threats of cancellation.

A White House spokesperson said the US president remained ready.

Hours earlier, North Korea released an angry statement saying it might pull out of the meeting if the US insisted it gave up its nuclear weapons…

In a television interview at the weekend, Mr Bolton said North Korea could follow a "Libya model" of verifiable denuclearisation, but this alarms Pyongyang, which watched Libya's Colonel Gaddafi give up his nuclear programme only for him to be killed by Western-backed rebels a few years later.

Re: North Korea

I don't think Trump can lose on this whichever way it goes. Everyman & his dog knows how NKs plays but Trump got those three Yanks out of there, so at the moment its 3-0.

Should the meeting not go on then Trump will lose big time.

Receiving the token gift of three Americans was great but in no way comparable to getting Kim to surrender his nuclear arsenal – he’s seen what happened in Libya & Ukraine and I wouldn’t blame him for not wanting to go down that path.

Verily twixt the devil & the deep blue sea.

Re: North Korea

Oops!... He Did It Again... Trumps new choice of security advisor ( only the best lol) In 2008 he f.,.. up the "big six" talks ending them ... this time he may have done it again with his remarks, that the de-nuking of NK could be like Libya... Duh (did he not remember the fate of that country's leader ) surely that would have instilled no end of confidence in Kim Un...not. The remarks seem to have upset Kim into rethinking the meeting...

Trump is distancing himself from Bolton's remarks, as he has invested too much of his ego in this meeting. So it could be a case of John “Don't let the door hit you on the way out.” How many is that now?

North Korea’s Second Thoughts on the Summit with Donald Trump

The more that Trump has embraced the meeting as a measure of his Presidency, the more Pyongyang stands to gain by threatening to scuttle it…
