Re: BREXIT - What now ?

Was reading an interesting article recently regarding some lucrative EU trade deal talks involving Australia amongst others

The interesting anomaly in the procedure for the talks was many members wanted U.K. excluded from the negotiations

Their argument is that the talks which are expected to take around 18 months should only involve continuing members as they fear that giving U.K. access to delicate terms and conditions on such deals could be detrimental to any rival trade deals between Australia and U.K. after Brexit

U.K. of course argue that as they are still currently full EU members they should be given full access to the talks including confidential trade terms

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

The same country's that want to bar the U.K. from discussions with Australia and other county's, will still want the U.K. to pay it's membership costs all through the time the U.K. is a member.

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

If they insist that we can not take part as a fully paid up member of the EU.
I would start negotiations with any country willing to talk trade deals straight away. What are the EU going to do, throw us out?

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

I don't think it's as simple as that as despite what some Brexiteers fantasise about UK after Brexit is still going to be tied up with Europe in different ways for many many years

I find it a bit daft that some think the UK will get all they want in negotiations-they won't. That's how negotiations work and UK/EU trade still has to continue all be it on a compromise basis

I can easily see a great split in the Brexiteer family when reality sets in that they cannot have everything they wanted or what their more gullible types believed they could achieve

Interesting times ahead

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

I've done what was required of me............put my x in the box, the rest is up to others.
I read the same article as Philip, this is only the start of it, no doubt there will plenty more of this obnoxiousness EU to come but its only to be expected. I also read that the Italian & French wine producers are now panicking for fear of UK wine drinkers (not me), could well sample other wines from lands afar & stick with them. They reckon that the attitude of the lead negotiator (French) stinks..............plenty to come yet, its early days.

Philip- as a fervent Brexiteer I truly hope there is no dipping out. I was not one who expected everything from the forthcoming negotiations. I expected certain no negotiables for either side - I just hope Theresa May is true to her words. The rest was up for grabs as far as I was concerned and we will just have to wait until the nitty gritty is concluded. I do expect more countries to leave the EU .And if we DO end up on the wrong side of things then we will just have to adapt to future changing conditions- I am sure there is plenty of success to be had post Brexit.

I have never for one minute thought that the UK would get everything it wants.
At the same time I don't want to see us held to ransom over trade deals and exorbitant demands for extra payments over and above paying our dues up until the severance. I would much rather walk away with nothing than for us to give, give , give to ever increasing demands from the EU. Call their bluff , when they start negotiating at sensible levels we parley, if not, goodbye.

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

I don't look for the EU to fail but I think it will take decades to reach the heights that some expect. Court cases galore are pending in the ECJ where member states are challenging each other..........the downfall of the EU IMO will be free movement of people.
