Re: BREXIT - What now ?

Michael in one sense all this panic, obstinatcy and circling of the wagons is only to be expected

Forget Brexit, Europe or even equaliy- the word that sends unionists into a frenzy thesedays is demographics

At heart they know the game is up

Some want to make the best deal they can now, others simply try to ignore the facts and others like wasps in Autumn are getting angrier and more frustrated as they see the endgame looming

We can wait

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

You are 100 % correct Philip ...what I can never understand is that they do absolutely nothing to win over the so called Soft Nationalists.
Personally I think the game is up and not if but when..

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

Their problem re attracting soft Nats amounts to a total paradox for them

Their hardline evangelical support is estimated at around 65% of their base

Therefore if they were ever inclined to move away from that extreme in order to gain a more liberal following they would lose more than they could attract

Opting for Brexit and aligning themselves with the more nutty Leavers has ended any chance of attracting mid ground voters

Indeed Brexit is making soft unionists esp Alliance types look to decide which is a better future- as part of a wider modern forward thinking Europe- or as after thought add ons to a motley crew of jingoistic little Englanders who themselves this week if they had got away with it were prepared to throw naive unionists under a big London bus

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

The DUPERs will not like like this ......the latest LucidTalk poll.

-57.8% support special status for NI within the EU
- A majority of 47.9% support NI remaining in the EU by joining a united Ireland
- 52.4% believe there will be a reduction in rights as a result of Brexit
- 75.8% believe EU standards should be maintained.

I see the Brexit Select committee visited the Irish border today but Rees Mogg and DUP Sammy Wilson declined taking part.

Interested in views on what the Chief Constable had to say from those in Ireland.

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

Janet whilst the CC unfortunately does play a political role at times here- leaving that aside for now- his informed comments chime with what I have been highlighting for months

Certain paramilitary elements feel all their Christmases will have come at once if theres any infrastructure whatsoever- be that border posts or cameras etc as they are itching to destroy them

As regards some poor sod unarmed customs officer standing on a lonely border road in South Armagh- I would not give tuppence for his chances of seeing his home again

. The thinking is-kill just one of them, British Army need deployed to protect them-end of GFA all for the price of one sniper shot

I do not want that to come across as flippant but that's how finely balanced the situ is

The CC obviously has hard intell to back up his bleak predictions and on the ground the general feeling is he is correct

Re: BREXIT - What now ?

Yesterday (or perhaps the day before) Lady Sylvia Hermon MP Independent for North Down and the only sitting MP from NI other than the DUP , said exactly the same thing as the Deputy Chief Constable, that not only would the PSNI but customs officers and customs staff could become the targets of dissidents in the event of us having a hard border. She is the lone rational N Ireland voice in Parliament speaking on behalf of those of us in NI who don't want to leave the EU.
