Sturgeon’s dream of independent Scotland in TATTERS

NICOLA Sturgeon’s hopes of an independent Scotland are looking increasingly unlikely as the country continues to suffer from a devastating oil slump.

After promising the nation was strong enough to go alone and break from the United Kingdom, critics have mocked Ms Sturgeon following the country’s sharp economic downturn.
One expert even said Scotland would be “staring at the abyss” if the population had voted for independence in the 2014 referendum.

Declining oil prices have led to huge job losses and the decline of towns like Aberdeen, which was once called ‘Europe’s Oil Capital’.

In the last two years, 100,000 people have lost their jobs in the industry while another 360,0000 have taken hefty pay cuts of around 20 per cent across Scotland. Those who have kept their jobs are spending more and more time on off-shore oil rigs rather than home with their families.

Aberdeen’s population has declined by 15 per cent since the oil market crash in late 2014, while house prices have similarly plummeted.

More students and young professionals are now planning to leave the city than remain.

Aberdeen’s house prices and population has plummeted during the oil slump

Despite this, the Scottish First Minister has repeatedly boasted of the economy’s strengths and called for independence.
She said in April: “Scotland’s economy has strong foundations – with employment outstripping the rest of the UK, inward investment levels booming and exports increasing – but we are determined to build on the progress we’ve made in recent years and go even further in boosting our economy and creating more and better jobs.”

And earlier this summer an SNP spokesman told Express.co.uk: “Scotland’s economy is strong, with recent years having increasing exports and among the highest levels of overseas investment in the whole of the UK – and we have regularly outperformed the rest of the UK when it comes to jobs, with recent months seeing employment levels at record highs, while our female employment rate is among the highest in Europe.”

Independence Experts have warned an independence campaign will make Scotland’s economy even more vulnerable

These declarations have now been dismissed by industry experts, who warned Scotland’s economy is heading towards an “abyss” – especially if Ms Sturgeon’s campaign for independence continues. Prof Gallagher of Oxford University said: “We would be staring at the abyss at the moment if we had voted for independence.”

Ordinary Scottish citizens also fear for the future, with hotel owner Stewart Spence warning: “What we are experiencing now is here to stay.”

Aberdeen was once ‘Europe’s Oil Capital’ but has struggled since 2014

He added: “When we had $100 oil, we had 100 percent [hotel] occupancy. Now we have $40-$50 dollar, we have 40-50 percent occupancy. That’s what we have to live with for the future.”

Jake Molloy of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union agreed, saying: “I think there is a lot more pain to come.”

Can anyone nail the drop in oil prices to Brexit? I bet when the losses globally are totalled up over the drop in oil,, they would make any forcasted losses due to Brexit look like loose change.
Get on board with us Nicola............we still have room for you.

Why not Spurs, all was glorious pre Brexit apparently, but the UK is now hurtling headlong towards total doom post Brexit.

Or being excellently managed (or miss-managed) so they can back out of Brexit sighting the UK downturn.

I'd have called her racist but using such a term might make me seem a bit PC.

She also seems to hold the tories , labour , and lib dems balls in her little hands , clearly the Scots , like much of the UK , are tired of disengaged politics.
