Re: ZIMBABWE seeing their Arab Spring ??

If they could resurrect tourism it could be a massive filup to their economy

I had some great hols in Kenya and there is something so different, almost magical about the experience of Africa as a tourist

Re: ZIMBABWE seeing their Arab Spring ??

It would be great if tourism could be revived but the average tourist on arrival at Harare would probably head straight back home again. Better to transit through Harare and go straight to Kariba Airport.

An amazing country, Vic Falls (bungee jumping into Devil’s Gorge isn’t compulsory), on Kariba a 6-berth cruiser will set you back about $20 pp daily with a 2 member crew, Hwange Safari Park, the Elephant Camp is just a few miles upstream at some $35 p/d (including your own elephant) and don’t get me started on the fishing ! …

Re: ZIMBABWE seeing their Arab Spring ??

Had some great hols in Kenya

Often people think Africa= safari hols but the beaches in Africa are way better imho than Europe

Did the safari thing but not for me- no one told me you need to get up very early morning to see many of the animals

However for scenery friendliness and atmosphere Africa is a place apart

It's one of those experiences which never leaves you

Have been told Botswana is even more magical

Have you been in Kenya?
How does it compare to other African countries

Also heard Angola has fledgling tourism now too?

A river trip we did in Kenya was one of the best experiences ever- despite crocodiles -which in real life are very very scary!!!!!! Locals explained to us how fast crocs can actually run!!!!

Never traveled much outside Nairobi and imo to compare it with other African cities is pretty much comparing one dung heap with another. Rather akin to Harare, you need to go rural to see the beauty of the country and its people.

Having said that the previously French colonies are even worse.

Crocs are among my most unfavourite animals (along with hippos & baboons) snagged a big one on Kariba but fortunately the line broke – really didn’t fancy getting the hook out

Maybe we should start a travelogue thread?

Zimbabwe in 10 numbers..

"Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe resigned last year after almost four decades in power. Now, the country is approaching its first post-Mugabe election, with his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa and MDC Alliance candidate Nelson Chamisa the two front-runners in a field of 23 candidates.

Here are 10 numbers that will help you understand how the country got to where it is now…

Army opens fire on violent opposition protests in Zimbabwe’s capital during wait for election results

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabwe’s army opened fire on opposition supporters, killing at least one person and wounding a number of others Wednesday in the heart of the capital, Harare, after protests over delays in reporting election results turned violent.

Thousands of backers of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) chanted anti-government slogans and destroyed benches, signs, stoplights and other targets in central Harare, prompting police to fire warning shots, water cannons and tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowds.

Protesters responded by burning tires, blocking streets and throwing rocks until the army intervened, sending people running for cover. Many protesters were wounded by military gunfire, which left at least one man dead on the street. The running battles between protesters and the army turned the center of the city into a war zone.

In the lengthy run-up to the announcement of Monday’s elections, opposition supporters feared that their candidate, Nelson Chamisa, would have the election stolen from him.

Chamisa declared an early victory Tuesday long before the counting had been completed — including in the rural regions that tend to overwhelmingly support the ruling party.

But his backers have leveled claims of rigging and intimidation by the ruling party that took over after long time leader Robert Mugabe was ousted in November…
