Re: Syria

Syria: chemical weapons inspectors denied access to Douma site

"Inspectors from the global chemical weapons watchdog have been unable to access sites controlled by Russia and the Syrian regime in the town of Douma to investigate an attack on 7 April that killed dozens and prompted US-led missile strikes over the weekend.

The director-general of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons told a meeting of the OPCW executive council that inspectors had not been allowed to visit the town outside Damascus, the UK delegation tweeted. “Unfettered access essential. Russia & Syria must cooperate,” the delegation tweeted.
According to Petter Lycke, Sweden’s representative at the OPCW executive council, Syria and Russia told the inspectors that their safety could not be guaranteed.

In remarks that could indicate an attempt to bog down the OPCW team, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, said the inspectors will not be allowed to access the site until they produce an appropriate UN permit.

Russian military officials were at the site of the Douma attack days before the OPCW reached Damascus, leading to fears that the site might have been tampered with…

So it seems that the OPCW won’t have access until the site has been sanitised!

Re: Syria

Yeah I remember all the stalling the time of the WMD Iraq weapons inspection too.

Even when they found nothing the outcome announced was that they had !!

Just like then it won't matter what's found/ not found the outcome will already have been written .

Then why do you suppose that the OPCW has not been granted site access?

It seems that the area is safe for the Russian specialists but not for the OPCW

Re: Syria

Exact same comedy drama happened with Sadaam

No access, then there was access, no weapons, but pretended there were.....and so the game continues

Re: Syria

Well Im going with, there was some form of chemical attack in Syria & only my opinion but I would hang that around Assads neck. If world leaders want to hang it around Assads allies necks also, then surely that should apply to other conflicts where the West are allies of some unsavoury countries.

Re: Syria

Sanity returns to TLF

Agree entirely

No one's denying we are dealing with a ruthless barsteward here capable of anything. All many of us ask for is consistency and cut the hypocrisy

It's notable only last week even Trump admitted there was not going to be a military solution to this issue and more generally with almost 85% of territory back under govt control, like him or hate him he's gonna be involved in the settlement, elections and new constitution

Excellent insight today by an analyst on 5 live brought up something I did not know about the dynamics out there. Apparently Assad actually has very little time for the Russians and it's at best a marriage of convenience

If you add to that VP being somewhat paranoid/ delusional and scitso at times- this race is far from run!!!!

Re: Syria

This illegal/unconstitutional military strike was designed not to defeat an enemy, or take territory, or achieve any kind of political goal, but rather to make some sort of showy statement about the Wests presumed moral superiority.

Welcome to the new world of virtue bombing.

Re: Syria

It's not totally beyond possibility if at some stage VP sees the whole shebang as no ,longer worth the hassle he could pull the plug

Who knows. Personally if I was Assad I would sleep with one eye open and always wear gloves when opening door handles..

It is not inconceivable either that Trump had indicated in advance his intention to do a limited strike. So either way, there would be nothing in this facility, before, during or after an inspection. It also seems the targets were agreed beforehand, in order to limit casualties. The reports are that a total of 3 people(!) were injured in attack that consisted of over 100 missiles and numerous bombs. This is part of the message you alluded to in an earlier post.

The US has previous on this:
