I thought the corridor tactic ,was to lure them out ,with a hope to escape to Syria , but the opening corridor is across a desert terrain, were it would be easier to pick the scum off. Rather than have them embedded in Mosul and have to extract them , house to booby trapped house, in an urban environment and amongst civillians .

I did see a report where it said drones would pick them off whilst crossing the desert but that corridor is for civilians as well.

Still a better idea wouldn't you say, than having to fight house to house urban warfare in a city, full of civilians at close quarter . Aleppo is testament to that in time taken to clear, and civilian death .....

Resounds a bit like the classic " kill them all, let God sort them out" not for use by Russians though.

No Mollag, it seems more of a tactic of giving civilians at least a chance of survival by escape, or to cut civilian losses, with less Daesh in the midst of the civilians in city and the urban war to come .

Its unfortunately inevitable civilians die in wars ...... a few less hopefully with this corridor .....

Well if the likes of Ramadi is anything to go by, where between ISIL & the coalition bombing about 80% of the buildings have been destroyed we can guess what going to happen to Mosul regardless of any corridor.

Re: Mosul......Iraq

A Mosul seige is going to be complex, this multi ethnic ,but mainly Sunni city actually welcomed Daesh after having to put up with terrible Shia sectarian abuse by the central pro Shia Govt of Iraqi.

They are now hoping the mainly Sunni population having lived under Daesh and thier abuses , the Coalition and Iraqi forces made up of some Shia militia the Iraqi Army which is mainly Shia , the Kurds and some Sunni militia will be welcomed as liberators , but I can imagine the people of Mosul will be having some trepidation of Shia reprisals. And if that happens will the Sunni militia included in the coalition after Daesh is ousted, turn on their Shia colleagues .

I won't be helped that the independent pro Iran funded militia Iranian officered Shia Bader Brigade are involved, in the fight. Infamously know for thier Death Squads and hate of Sunnis , forced on the coalition by the Iranian influenced but legit Iraqi Govt .

Then we have the KRG Kurds will they leave Mosul to the Iraqi Central Govt after the fight or not give up the land taken.

We would have also have had Erdogan interference , but he has been kept out the fight by the Iraqis, although he has his proxy Turkish military trained militia in the fight . But not before he brought up Turkeys case over Mosul using a international forum he brought the 1920's old pact Misak i Milli (National Oath) that designates both Kirkuk and Mosul as parts of Turkey.

He said it was only in 1926 that Iraq, Turkey, and the then colonial power of Great Britain agreed the Ankara Pact that Iraq should keep Mosul on recommendation of the League of Nations Council. He also with his ME allies would like to secure Mosul stays a Sunni city ......

So another turmoil ,and more Daesh heading to Turkey with now hatred of Erdogan having changed policies ........

Re: Mosul......Iraq

I don’t think it will be such a hard battle to retake Mosul. The Daesh soldiers won’t have the stomach for a fight they know they can’t win. Most of them will already have scarpered to Syria. There will probably be an initial surge of suicide bombers, but that is a problem which logically resolves it’s self.
The biggest challenge is yet to come, and that’s to stop the Peshmerga, the Iraqi’s and all the other forces with a finger in the greasy, or should I say oily, pie, from fighting with each other, once Daesh has been routed.
