Re: Who's Spending Britain's Billions???
There is no wonder there are equipment shortages. Try taking equipment back to the hospital, they tell you to dispose of it yourself. We have crutches, a frame that fits over the loo ( to assist getting on and off the loo) and gadget that was used to excersise Ann's leg, post knee joint ops. These all will have a cost to replace, but the hospital don't want to know.
This I suspect is the bottom end of waste in the NHS, but multiply it by everything in similar situations and it is easy to see why health authorities are short of money.

Re: Who's Spending Britain's Billions???
It's time the NHS was taken by the scruff of the neck and shaken into the 21st Century. No-one seems to be able to control the spending. Today the Times front page is reporting that 'stand-in bosses' are being paid £430k salaries. Money seems to flow in the wrong direction.
I severed an Achilles tendon some years ago; at 10am I was in A & E. After waiting for just over an hour I was put in a side ward, where I stayed for 33 hours more before being operated on the following night. There wasn't even a bed available in the orthopaedics ward until 2 pm the day after my injury.
During the time I spent in the side ward I was visited once by the consultant, who said I should have temporary treatment.
This consisted of. . . wait for it. . . .
my injured leg was doused in a bucket of IODINE (pain indescribable) and a temporary plaster cast applied. Welcome to modern medicine.
Hours after I finally reached the ortho ward a couple of anaesthetists came rushing in, saying they had been looking for me everywhere, and where had I been, as if I had been hiding! Didn't they have any record of patient movements? There wasn't another ward.
The nurses seemed to spend more time discussing their social lives and when I asked for help to get to the bathroom the day after the op it was suggested that I just did it in the bed because they were too busy. Disgusting!
The best treatment was the physiotherapists who got me back on my feet, and I'm about 95% ok now, but given that this was the University hospital of Wales in Cardiff, we were not impressed.

Re: Who's Spending Britain's Billions???
£3.7 Billion!!!!! of Tax payers cash cannot be Accounted for by the Local Enterprise Partnership!!! Grants made in secret, No Records kept, No guidelines are set on who/how/why these vast amounts of money are allocated
"The officials sit on boards called Local Enterprise Partnerships or LEPs consisting of local business bosses and council chiefs. These bodies have not accounted for £3.7billion of the cash they have been given by the Government.
Astonishingly there are no rules to prevent the officials from using the cash to award grants to themselves, or from making their decisions in secret.
In the first comprehensive audit of the billions spent under the Growth Deal, the Mail’s investigation found conflicts of interest over hundreds of payments. In some of the most extraordinary cases:"
■ A board boss saw his own call centre handed a £1million taxpayer-funded grant – a quarter of the funding available for his area;
■ A multi-millionaire banker oversaw payments of nearly £13,000 to his family’s Norman castle for board events;
■ A board member’s multi-millionaire business partner received a £40,000 payment – to renovate a luxury barn on his estate that they both used as their offices;
■ A £60,000 grant intended for local companies was given to a Saudi chemical giant after its UK boss joined an LEP board.

Re: Who's Spending Britain's Billions???
Another lot who seem to be burning their way through our wonga according to a report today, is the use of 'consultants' to 'advise' how to spend the foreign aid budget.
Apparently analysis of 70,000 financial transactions has shown a spend of £1billion per year since 2012 with 10 British companies taking half of that.
DfID paid Krishnan Guru-Murthy of Channel 4 News £26k and Zeinap Badawi of the BBC £14k to moderate a 2 day conference in Mexico in 2014. He's now promised to pay some of this (after tax) to an international charity. Hmmmm.
JP Morgan shared £1 million with a law firm to advise on Nigeria's funds. . .
There's lots more, all of it infuriating.

The Gift that just keeps on Giving mates a helping hand............. Sir Waste-a-lot is taking the P big-time! He (& others) should be facing Gross Negligence charges Not rewarded for his actions!!!
"High street stores including Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Tesco have been handed millions of pounds from Britain’s ‘out of control’ foreign aid budget.
The retail giants, which make huge profits each year, were given enormous taxpayer-funded grants to help their overseas suppliers."
