Angry Who's Spending Britain's Billions???

Did anyone else watch this programme last night? It will be repeated on Sunday 6pm BBC2, or it's available on catch-up. Sooo worth watching!

It's a total disgrace that most of our services are being 'contracted out' to the Private sector - But at what Cost to us & our services. The big company's & multinationals are Milking UK for all they can get & our government has been encouraging them to, it's Got to be Stopped before Britain collapses in ruins!

"Jacques Peretti is on the warpath again. The light-footed investigative reporter is angry about waste in the public sector. In an early scene here he takes to the water to give us a glimpse of a vast aircraft carrier being built in Scotland. The original budgeted cost for a pair of these new ships: 3.6 billion. The actual cost so far: 6 billion. The expected cost by the time they’re in service: up to 12 billion, by some estimates.

It’s a shocking start, but Peretti doesn’t attempt to unpack where megaprojects like this go wrong – instead he focuses on how local authorities pay management consultants (PricewaterhouseCoopers comes out of the film particularly badly) large sums for “operating model assessments” and “transformation programmes”, with the firms often taking a percentage of savings they find. It’s not a pretty picture.

Summary

Jacques Peretti looks beyond the well-known budgets of schools, hospitals and foreign aid to the range of taxation projects the public know less about. Peretti finds that local councils across the UK are signing contracts with management consultancy firms who can take a percentage of any savings they find. He also reveals that hundreds of the millions of taxpayers' pounds spent on these contracts are covered by confidential deals, meaning very little detail is known about them. In this revealing insight, Peretti asks if the public deserves to know more about how those charged with managing the nation's billions are spending it."

Re: Who's Spending Britain's Billions???

Peretti, presented the program in a very easy to follow format, for me it summed up what I think has/is really been happening in Privatised Britain & why so many of our services are now more expensive to run.

Private Contracting companies are costing the Tax payer much more & delivering worse services, which have/are being cut, reduced etc. The extra billions HM Gov has been ploughing into, Health, Education, social care, housing etc, etc is going into the pockets of these companies Not, into bettering the services which are struggling to Cope!

These big corporates are running rings round Local Councils, Health authorities etc etc.... Head of Cardiff City Council, wouldn't answer any questions on the contract the council has with PWC, saying it is contractually sensitive & confidential, she lost her rag & asked him to leave her office! She is Answerable to the local electorate Not Price Waterhouse Cooper, Accountants to the Elite........

Think you'll find she is answerable to PWC.

Here's one scheme, apparently the interest paid on these loans increased from 3.5% to 20%.;

Re: Who's Spending Britain's Billions???

The problem is the long term cost; if all these services are inhouse and provided by the LAs and central government, there are the ancillary costs of Civil Service pensions (non or minimal contributions by employees) plus index linked salaries on a defined pay scale.
Did the programme look at the comparison of these costs at all?
The other problem is the complete lack of any business acumen within these huge organisations such as the NHS. They don't seem to have any idea about making deals and getting together to bulk buy.
Very frustrating!

The programme covers the bases Kanga, identifying how widely practised contracting out has become across the board. They also highlight some of the very poor & expensive services being provided.

PWC services are initially to contracted to identify where 'costs' can be cut, (don't know who's recommending PWC to them all) staff, working from a template scenario, they just change the name of the LA with each contract. The aim is (it seems) to make themselves look very useful to entice LA's into broader contracts where they then also take a % of any monies saved...... McKenzie's were used to produce the costly & disastrous Top-down report on the NHS.........

I've just come across another service that's being contracted out & fast becoming a privatised industry - Fostering & Adoption! A company that set themselves up as a registered Charity is now contracted by several LA's across the country to provide (at least) part of this service for them. This apparently frees up the Social workers time to concentrate on more time-consuming cases....

This 'Charity' is now involved with 'placing refugee children' in foster homes. They have also signed a contract to provide Peterborough LA with some of their Fostering services - The Same council who just recently agreed to house the already homeless in houses where the tenants are being evicted to make room for the already homeless............

There's a short radio interview with a representative of this company at the end of this link:

Re: Who's Spending Britain's Billions???

Four hundred and seventy thousand emergency ambulance patients were kept waiting on a trolley for more than four hours before entering the A & E ward.

Whatever else the Tories are doing , gutting the NHS must give them great satisfaction.

As they guffaw in their private hospital suites.
