Outrage over GOVT motion

It is now more than obvious which direction (backwards) the AKP is taking the country away from the secular Republic to tribalism .....by the recent bill introduced and supported and enabled by the MHP ....

Outrage over AKP motion said to let abusers avoid prosecution if they marry child victim

Extract from HDN...
Men guilty of sexually abuse may avoid being prosecuted if they marry the victim, according to a controversial motion proposed by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) that has been harshly criticized by opposition parties.

In the case of sexual abuse committed before Nov. 11, if the perpetrator marries the victim “without force or threat,” the sentence will be postponed, according to the motion.

The motion was issued with a 49-article bill in a night session in parliament attended by the AKP, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

The motion passed but the bill did not receive a majority vote, meaning the articles have not been validated yet. The assembly will gather to vote on the entire bill again on Nov. 22.

CHP Muğla deputy Ömer Süha Aldan slammed the motion, saying it will “encourage forced marriages and legalize marriage to rapists.”

Re: President till 2029

Bal,

You really should have put this article in a new thread otherwise it will get lost. It's an important proposal and one which would effect generations of Turkish girls to come. Unfortunately there are still a few members who refuse to believe these gross and unjust beliefs run as deep and popular as we know they do among the AKP (and their supporters). The secular Turks are really suffering these days, though the only free outlet (often blocked) for their pain and anger seems to be social media. Everything else is slowly ebbing away.

I feel for you, I honestly do.

Ddn't think they recognised same sex marriage in Turkie, because not all rape victims will be against females

Ah yes, but the comment I liked most in the discussion regarding the proposal was made by none other than the justice minister who claimed "The courts only consider the age and give sentences of 16 years regardless of circumstances. They do not consider whether the underage marriage has happened with or without the consent of the traditions of the families,” Because, after all, everyone knows the judiciary should reflect peoples traditions (ala Saudi Arabia)
instead of the law.

My second favourite comment was made by the unelected prime minister himself (the man who couldn't even get elected as Izmir mayor) -

saying that suffering occurred because “there are families who do not know the law” and adding that such suffering will be eliminated with this one-time regulation.
Aww, yes, we must excuse those who suffer because they don't know the law! What are we thinking?!
Er, think how that would work if used as a defence in most cases (drink driving, wife beating, stealing...).

Good luck Turkey,

Charlotte

Re: Outrage over GOVT motion

It makes me want to sell up. Attitudes I can't connect with, marrying the victim is further abuse not a solution to it. Listening to a Turkish women who is involved with woman & children's rights in Turkey on TV tonight she said it's considered that a 12 year old is able to give consent! Rape isn't consent whatever the age.

Re: Outrage over GOVT motion

Whose permission will be given (or denied) for the marriage?

We have already seen this happen after a nasty incident a few years ago in Datca.
The best thing that came out of it was that the poor girl was removed from an abusive family home where she was often beaten (she was a neighbour of ours and we intervened more than once). Her attacker paid the family off, but did marry the girl who had a child as a result of the attack, which she adores. The husband does support them both and as far as I can tell when I see her she is happy, but they live separate lives.

I dread the future for young girls and hope that things don't descend to the level of depravity we have seen in India and S America.
If ANY of the Turkish lawmakers have condemned those incidents they should condemn this move too.
