Robert Nairac - Murdered

Double standards or what?

The Mail can reveal that Terry McCormick and Pat Maguire were among 187 on-the-run paramilitary suspects who received 'comfort letters' dubbed 'get-out-of-jail-free cards' which told them they were not being sought by police.

The pair were wanted for questioning about the murder of Captain Robert Nairac 40 years ago today in one of the most brutal incidents in the Troubles.

The revelation of the amnesty offered to the men comes after it emerged 18 British soldiers could be charged over their involvement in Bloody Sunday.

Re: Robert Nairac - Murdered

Not sure which issue you mean, if you mean the Good Friday Agreement then yes it was public but if you mean the letters then no I am not aware that Parliament voted on the issue.

Something did have to be done and concessions made by both sides and the agreement came out of it. I did not have an issue with MMG being involved because he had to be, I had the problem with making him out to be something he wasn't after he died.

I don't have a problem with Gerry Adams involvement in the agreement neither for the same reasons. Only people who hold power can sway things and get them accepted, bitter pill to swallow, but we have to swallow it all the same.

MMG and GA had a cause they believed in, they suffered by what was happening around them, others suffered because of what they believed in, but Corbayn was just a traitor hanging on their coat tails, he had no experience of what the Catholics, Unionists, or whateverists were suffering or perceived to be suffering.

If I had been brought up on the Falls Road I have a funny feeling I would think different than I do, but I wasn't and neither was Corbyn.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Was it a secret deal?
Members of the former Labour administration insist it was not a secret policy but political parties in Northern Ireland, other than Sinn Fein, said they either knew nothing of the scheme, or at least the scale of it, until the John Downey affair.

What was the John Downey case?
John Downey was a suspect in the 1982 IRA bombing in Hyde Park, which left four soldiers dead after a nail bomb tore through the ranks of the Household Cavalry on a Changing of the Guard procession.

In May 2013 he was arrested as he entered the UK and charged with the murders but the prosecution collapsed in February last year after it emerged he had been sent a comfort letter.

Senior criminal judge Mr Justice Sweeney ruled that the assurances given in the letter had to stand even though there had been a “catastrophic failure” in the case because Mr Downey had been sent the letter in error.

He was still formally wanted by the Metropolitan Police for the Hyde Park bombing but the Police Service of Northern Ireland failed to pass that detail on to the authorities when the letter was sent.

The judge said that despite the blunder it offended the "court's sense of justice and propriety" to now try the defendant.

It was during the legal case that the true scale of the so-called “on-the-runs” scheme emerged.

Re: Robert Nairac - Murdered

A tempered response. Perhaps any 'amnesty' should come after the location of Captain Nairac GC.

Interesting one Norm

For example in our conflict if the SAS were shooting RA members you count that as ok, but when an SAS man is caught out, beat to the draw as it were, it's murder.....

Why do you always presume what people think, condone or count as okay Philip?
