Re: As at 1st January 2018 no plastic bags in Turkey

Easy biodegrade plastic is available , manufacturers do not like it , nor do retailers , stock rotation problems . Not imho a valid reason to demur .

Re: As at 1st January 2018 no plastic bags in Turkey

The link would not open for me either.

I have been in the habit for many years now (prior to the charge being introduced) of carrying my own bags. These generally are the ones that cost about £1 and are waterproof. Whilst I use a shopping trolley, these bags are normally in the bag at the bag of the trolley, ready for bulky items and soft stuff like bread that would get squashed in the trolley.

I had a trolley in Turkey (which I never got back) but also had many other bags in this also.

I have a really rather large supply of plastic bags which are useful in the house for many purposes. However, I have noticed that in the case of some items, wrapped in bags for various reasons, these have biodegraded. They make a mess, but it is not possible to know which will biodegrade and and which won't.

I totally agree with the ban on plastic water bottles. I have been in Turkey on and off for many years, add to this Middle east and Africa and have very rarely felt the need to carry a water bottle with me. have a drink before you go, when you get there and before you head back. have a bottle inj the car by all means but it does not need to be plastic. When we first bought a home in Bodrum in the 90s, a small truck came round every few days and you bought 19L glass bottles from him, they were washed and refilled.New laws outlawed it, we have landfill tips and oceans filled with plastic. I still have my glass bottle, just no-one to fill it.

In USA supermarkets it is (in my experience) only paper bags that are offered. I expect the same thing will appear here.

Unlike some people there are those that have a life and only come on here occasionally (or when bored) unlike some who seem to have nothing else to do except sit glued to a computer screen.

I was thinking of this as a much more eco friendly idea, but then I thought of the destruction of rainforests etc for paper.... there is no perfect solution.🤔

At least paper can be regrown, and whilst it is growing it is absorbing carbon. A much better system if properly managed. The main idea though should be re-use. Bags for life, restrictions on excessive packaging should be next.
