New NHS rules for foreign visitors

New rules have come into force that require all providers of treatment on the NHS to establish if patients are eligible for free care as part of efforts to tackle health tourism.

Re: New NHS rules for foreign visitors

Sounds good. But the instructions for ascertaining a person's right or not seem a bit confusing. Probably will not make any difference as NHS personnel will just carry on as before. Who is to say they are wrong and not complying? Unworkable in my opinion.

Re: New NHS rules for foreign visitors

I recently renewed my car insurance, as usual I checked out other providers looking for the best deal. All the insurance companies I had quotes from are now asking more personal questions including "Have you ever lived abroad?" then, how long & where did you live abroad? & how long have you Now been a permanent UK resident?

They're also asking if the NC (No Claims) you have, have been earned on a car insured in the UK. Some companies are also now charging an extra Ģ20 Admin fee, this might be to compensate them for the extra info they are collating?

No doubt all this extra information is fed into their data-bases which can then be shared with others. So it looks like it will be very difficult in future for all people resident outside the UK, to claim free services.

Re: New NHS rules for foreign visitors

Its about time something was done about this situation. It's the National Health Service NOT the Global Health Sevice. Sadly & annoyingly, I think Maise is right - I doubt it will happen. I know of several people who have been living for many years abroad but still claim treatment in the UK by giving a relatives address. If you've paid the full whack into the system (37 years ?) then you should be able to use the system IMO.

Re: New NHS rules for foreign visitors

The main opposition to this comes from the medics themselves, which seems strange when they are always looking for more money.

It canīt be that hard to insist of foreigners (non-EU for the time being) showing health insurance at airport check-in, and make the airlines pay if they donīt check. Trucking companies are liable for people who smuggle themselves into UK, so widen it to cover all ports of entry and turn them back (or sell them insurance) as they step off the plane.

Expats using services they are not entitled to are just as bad.

I do not believe it is compulsory for UK citizens to hold medical insurance before venturing abroad .

It is mandatory for some countries but not within Europe.

So what will happen when we are "out"? I assume the EHIC card will be fairly useless.

Toilet paper Maisie , once brexit is " achieved " , for retirees it is going to be extremely expensive to insure for full health care , and of course must be done for each and every country individually , unlike short term holiday cover .

Let's lie , let's make brexit great .

Ironically NHS personnel have No problems insisting that genuine, verified patients standing right in front of them, who want/need a simple copy of a record/x-ray, apply to the relevant Dept, request an Long application form, complete, return it with a fee of Ģ10, then wait to see if the request is successful.......

In my own experience; it took talking to 4 separate dept's, before being directed to the correct one to deal with my request. All the staff were very polite & pleasant, investigated who could deal with my request etc, but I wonder just how much did my one simple request cost the NHS in personnel time? I would willingly have paid a reasonable copy/admin charge there & then!

As it happens when I eventually received through the post & read the very lengthy form, I couldn't be arsed to fill in the lengthy application form after all - how much is poor & complicated administration costing the NHS pa?

We need to ensure that Any New money being given to the NHS is being spent effectively & Wisely, not ending up in the pocket of an admin arm of one of the partnership/NHS associated private companies..........
