Re: Environmental concerns

Greenpeace Akdeniz (Mediterranean Sea)

The amount of plastic waste sent from European Union countries to be processed in Turkey increased 173-fold since 2004.

This means that Turkey is receiving an average of 213 trucks of plastic waste from the EU every day.

Turkey’s plastic waste imports reached their highest ever level in 2019, at an average monthly quantity of 48,500 tons, Diken reported.

The highest plastic waste exporters to Turkey last year were Britain (153,967 tons), Italy (89,470), Belgium (85,843), Germany (67,466), and France (56,824).

A report by the BBC on Wednesday on the export of plastic waste from Britain to Turkey revealed how it appears some waste is ending up being dumped on roadsides instead of being recycled.

Research published in the journal Science listed Turkey among the top 20 countries in the world for mismanaging plastic waste. Turkey is also responsible for about a fifth of all plastic leaked into the Mediterranean, according to a 2019 report by the World Wildlife Fund.

According to "A Mediterranean Full of Plastic" report released last year by Greenpeace, plastics were present in 92.8 percent of the samples collected from the Mediterranean Sea in 2013.

Bianet reported last year that at least 150,000 people had signed a project run by Greenpeace Mediterranean to ban single-use plastics in Turkey. The EU signed the agreement introducing an EU-wide ban on single-use plastics on December 20, 2018.

Re: Environmental concerns

What a shocking sight !!! What can be done about it ? More or less everything that I buy is in a plastic tray/wrapper. We do recycle but where does it go ? It really worries me to see this picture. On the other hand, do most people really give a damn ? After seeing our beach and others in the U.K. after a family day out or BBQ the litter and cans/bottles is a disgrace, even though there are plenty of bins available.

Re: Environmental concerns

It is a pretty graphic, but a bit misleading. For example, it takes no account of relative land mass or population - so Canada looks fantastic, but most of its land is wilderness; compare UK with France, but take account that France is twice the size of UK. So if you have a lot of trees and a small population, you will always be top of this tree.

Poor Egypt, with a large population, few trees, and a desert environment, will always be at the bottom, unless you bring Namibia into the competition; I will guess that Russia might be towards the top, but has a pretty poor environmental record.

Greenland's ice sheet has melted to a point of no return, according to new study

(CNN)Greenland's ice sheet has melted to a point of no return, and efforts to slow global warming will not stop it from disintegrating. That's according to a new study by researchers at Ohio State University.

"The ice sheet is now in this new dynamic state, where even if we went back to a climate that was more like what we had 20 or 30 years ago, we would still be pretty quickly losing mass," Ian Howat, co-author of the study and a professor at Ohio State University, said.

Greenland's ice sheet dumps more than 280 billion metric tons of melting ice into the ocean each year, making it the greatest single contributor to global sea level rise, according to Michalea King, the lead author of the study and researcher at Ohio State University.

The ice loss has been so massive in recent years, she said, that it has caused a measurable change in the gravitational field over Greenland.
