Re: Environmental concerns

Coffee cups are particularly hard to recycle because they contain a paper exterior with a plastic lining to keep the cup sealed.
Coffee chains under growing pressure to reveal true extent of plastic pollution | The Independent

Yes IA, but so is my totally recyclable yoghurt pot. Why can't they make cups in the same way, or better still, just use these pots. The card sleeve is attached with a small dab of glue and the tear strip takes it off to separate for recycling. Seems to me it's lack of imagination or the will to find another answer.

Re: Environmental concerns

My main point is that we do not need to use 'disposable' cups at all. Nor do we need to carry small bottles of water with us. have a drink before you leave home, sit down for a drink in a cafe at some point, it is just a lazy habit that is polluting our planet.

Re: Environmental concerns

Tintagel. This was taken from "The Week" 23rd December.

With news that it is contributing to the plastic waste crises. Unbeknown to most tea drinkers, teabags contain up to 25% plastic (which explains why they don't break down in compost) Britons use about 60 billion teabags - containing 2,400 tonnes of plastic a year.

We have a tea pot and will be using leaf tea most times. It is good that the (mis) use of plastic is being well debated both on the news, papers and even on here !! Educated is the key, I think.

Re: Environmental concerns

Had no idea Hils , thanks .

Ibrahim , i worked in the City for years , a load of people grab a coffee and take it into the office / workplace , i first did this in 1967 after exiting the tube at Blackfriars and going into work .

As a kid i was not allowed , but i put down the cardboard tray of coffees and the whisky came out and most folk ( not YT ) got a glug , newspaper offices in the old days for you .

And yes , the ashtrays were already full .

Re: Environmental concerns

When I was in school we were not allowed to eat in the street if wearing school uniform, and heaven help you if you were caught! It's a disgusting habit and no wonder we have so many rats when people just dump unwanted food anywhere.
It's also a health hazard; do you know what is in the atmosphere landing on your food? Thought not.
IA yes, absolutely agree we dont need disposable cups.

Later addition.
Have just seen this in Hurriyet . Here's hoping it's the start of something good.

Re: Environmental concerns

Just heard on the BBC news that Iceland (the store) are eliminating all plastic packaging from their own brand goods. The first in the world, apparently. An excellent start and, hopefully, others will follow !

Re: Environmental concerns

I was disappointed that Bosphorus ferries in Istanbul started selling the çay (tea) in plastic cups instead of the sparkling clean Turkish glasses.

There was something nice sitting outside on the side of the ferry cupping the glass in your hand's imaging the many others that had done the same and seen the same skyline over the years, plastic just doesn't have the same feel.

Re: Environmental concerns

Ha, those plastic cay cups will be tossed straight into the Bosphorus Camden - what a backward step that is, with all the talk of plastic now !!! We are now using a teapot instead of teabags for our early morning cuppa and bought a cafetier (?) instead of our Nespresso that uses those little moulded plastic coffee containers. Just trying to do our bit !

Re: Environmental concerns

We use a senseo Hils , i use refillable coffee duck , you just scoop coffe in , use , empty and rinse and off you go again .

They are available for Nespresso Hils , no waste and you get to use your favourite ground coffee .

Refillable capsules and pods for Senseo and Nespresso - Coffeeduck

I have been using coffee ducks for years , they last forever imho .
