Kick starting old industries sounds a great idea but they would need to be up-dated in terms of health & safety, emissions etc etc - and where you find experienced steel workers in UK or US today?

Like any trade/industry/production line, you train the people & that applies to anything new that comes on the market. Cant speak for US steel workers but we still have steel workers operating in steel plants here in the UK, I would assume that the US has likewise. Its not like that industry has vanished from our shores.

Fair enough comment but have the remaining mills been updated? Shotton obviously not.

And this probably applies to other heavy/dirty industries, ship building etc a lot of catching up to do.

Every country needs its heavy industries but that is not the way forward Singapore is a shining example of this.

But, apologies, this thread is about Trump & my comments would be better suited to the Brexit thread.

But maybe you can tell me where you've got your information from that you know which two countries will be hit with tariffs? Which two? And when you've come up with the obvious, why is the EU trade minister even getting involved IF none of this will be aimed at the EU?
This is good news regarding Granite City works , but it is still a functioning plant for hot steel , they shut two furnaces and intend to reopen one .

So it is in fact a re initialisation of recently mothballed plant , not a completely reopened facility .

but good for jobs nonetheless .

Yes Steve a long way to go but its a start & American workers will appreciate that.
I think people now in the developed world are starting to ask why on many issues. We might not all understand the huge trade figures but every now & then something pops up that people can and do understand & quite rightly question it..............its a politicians downfall when they cant explain the imbalance on certain trade agreements.
As said the EU is now playing with the most powerful country on this planet, the US has been tried & tested many times..........the EU hasn't IMO.....clear the decks.

Re: Donald Trump. Doing rather well.

Intrigue over what's going to happen over the next few days.
When Liam Fox announced he was going to the US for exemption over steel tariffs, the EU was quick to say that it was all 28 together. Indications of it being a breach of EU rules for a member state to go it alone with the US............Now Germany heads off to the US, Germany being the largest steel producer in the EU........deal or no deal?

Re: Donald Trump. Doing rather well.

An interesting comment left on an article.

"Don’t believe the EU propaganda and disinformation machine, for all is not as rosy as they portray it:
It is doubtful whether the European Commission has a legal case against US sanctions under WTO rules. And if there is no legal case against US tariffs, there is no legal case in favour of retaliation either. In other words, the EU is stuck/shafted/check-mated."

Perhaps the legislation referred to is the article under WTO rules which allow for tariffs for National Security reasons. However that article also seems to prohibit the importation of said goods for public consumption as against for military use.

If this is in fact the legislation referred to then its not just the EU it affects but everyone else as well.

The National Security rule was added for obvious reasons, however should it be abused then a tit for tat free for all may evolve which is exactly what the WTO rules are there to prevent.
