This law is frightening

Whatever your views on local politics, the idea of this intended law is frightening. Extract from Hurriyet article.

'However, to punish Turkey, Congress is currently working on the Magnitsky Act, which allows the U.S. government to sanction foreign government officials implicated in human rights abuses. The priority of the Congress is to sanction certain Turkish officials as responsible for the ongoing detention of Pastor Andrew Brunson and other U.S. nationals, as well as U.S. Consulate staff in Turkey'.

Please don't tell me Trump has business interests there in Turkey? If so a larger doghouse will be needed.

Turkey is in a great position, the EU needs it if for nothing else but to hold back the refugees. NATO needs it. Realistically the US needs Turkey on their side & Russia needs it for a gas pipeline............problem is there's no such thing as "soft power" in Turkey.

Re: This law is frightening

Surely any democratic country has the right to sanction unpleasant visitors to their shores, or should they just roll over weakly and allow all sorts of trash to do as they like with impunity?
The Magnitsky Act has been used before.
I seem to remember the UK refusing visiting rights to one or two dubious characters in the past; what's the difference?

Re: This law is frightening

I do not know the details of the act, but was wary about the therm 'imposing sanctions', the problem that I have with the US 'imposing sanctions' is that they expect every other country to uphold them too.

Turkey resumes pressure on US Consulate staff

Turkey has reneged on its pledge to not hound locally employed staff at US missions on its soil, with police interrogating a Turkish citizen working for the US Consulate in Istanbul yesterday,
