Re: UK foreign Policy
China cannot just annex great swathes of ocean and deny access or passage, so good, let's keep using the high seas as peaceful international travel has done for years. They have deliberately annexed tiny islets and developed them for what looks like a military purpose, which looks like regional bullying.

Not like The Falklands or Gibraltar at all?
Can you see a contradiction? toadying one day, "Challenging" the next, I think we made a big thing recently about escorting Russian warships through the Channel, lets hope the Chinese dont do the same for us, that one ship, we cannot afford to lose.
How long till the fact we are not a World power set's in?

Re: UK foreign Policy
Nice one!
That was a few centuries ago, one would hope the world has moved on a bit since then, but please let's not get on to Gib and the Falklands, which are inhabited, unlike China's latest acquisitions.
At least the people of Gib and Falklands can have a democratic say about their future,I don't see much democracy or individual freedom of choice in China, for all its Ali Baba offerings.

And yet Theresa is out there touting for business from them, what does that say about our standards?, It is this, please be our friend for money on one hand and, We are the other side of the World but you need our permission for your actions or we will send a gunboat.---It would make a fine Ealing comedy, "The Mouse that roared", oh. hang on, hasnt that------ ? [Now I have said that, the similarites to the film are quite uncomfortable.]

Re: UK foreign Policy
Trade is one thing international waterways & safe passage are something else or that's what I've always thought.
Bit like the space station, the US/Russia might be at each others throats but for some things its just business as usual.
Its been well documented though that the US looks at China to be more of a threat to world peace than they do Russia, don't ask me why.
There was a big deal about the Russian ships sailing through the English Channel but it was well within its Rights to do so, didn't they also take shelter/anchor just off the French coast?
A big deal was made of it, headline stuff but what actually happened...........nothing. Passing ships in the night type of stuff.

I wonder how Chinese ships challenging our perceived rights of ownership of the Falklands or Gibraltar would go down?, there are plenty of countries think we are out of order in those remote islands, any chance of us sending a Military challenge to Israel when they annexe some more Palestinian land where there are folks already living?---I thought not. It's the rank hypocrisy of it that galls me.

Personally I don't think the Chinese have any views over either, they're only interested in their neck of the woods. But I have to say, one involves a Right of passage & the other seems to involve land.
The Yanks have done no more than they always do...........got too close to a country that if push comes to shove they will be taken on. I even read talk of Japan being "offered" a place in NATO, how the hell that works goes beyond me.
