I can remember the telephone wires stretched so much that they looped almost to the ground with the weight of continual frosts building up on them. The railings on the sea wall around the marine drive were solid with ice for weeks on end. As an apprentice I was glad when there was no more work we could do on the housing site, so we had to go into the joiners shop and make window and door frames ready for use when the thaw came.
At the time I had a little jack Russell dog and myself and a mate were taking a short cut across the golf course as there had been no play on the course for weeks due to the snow. As we walked across the dog saw a rabbit and set off to chase it ( he hadn’t a prayer of ever catching a rabbit ) As the rabbit ran from the dog it did a “chicane “ type dodge, while the dog just kept on a straight line. The dog disappeared under a metre of snow that had filled a bunk, it goes to show how intelligent wild animals are .
Me & my brothers made a right few quid clearing paths that year, that's when snow was snow...........I suppose you need a licence to do that nowadays & tax returns.

Been through the winter of 48 and 62 all without c/htng /double glazing cav/wall insulation. This morning was -6.7 C and was pretty good here in kent , indoors with no heating on .

I think they could, they'd just complain louder than I/we did.

The storm is still raging in Fife, we're right in the middle of the red zone. Our central heating went down thru the night. Caused a bit of a panic I can tell you - big softies - however it was just the pilot light going out. Re-started the boiler and it's working ok. Ted is still not keen to go out.

Re: Beast from the East

As it is now the 1st March, St David's Day, I would have thought the weather you are currently experiencing in the UK is very much out of the ordinary. But no one has mentioned global warming yet.

Does anyone think it is responsible?

Don't know what sort of boiler you have ,but when my pilot light kept going out ,it was the thermo couple link faulty. I replaced it myself as you do not disturb the gas side of boiler. Its easy and thermo couples are cheap ( kept 2 spare ).
