Beast from the East

No, not Jaycey, LOL.

Not yet sure how this beast will affect us but it does remind me of all the stories I have heard over the years about the 1947 winter.

A LOOK BACK: Winter of 1946-47 : MarkVoganWeather.com

In particular, a lovely older lady in my village recounts her story often.

A family of four, 2 parents and 2 children living high up in Teesdale on a rented farm. cut of for weeks, finally her Father walked to Barnard Castle and back for some supplies.

They lost all their stock, forced to give up the farm and came down here for him to find a job as a farm labourer.

I am often regaled with similar stories of the misery caused in the upper dales during that winter.

Re: Beast from the East

Today the Beast from the East arrived on and off then early this evening it stopped but had settled. I had to go out this evening and even my de-icer was freezing over including the de-icer in the windscreen wash. It took 15 minutes for it to clear. Anyway lucky for me my return journey was effortlessly done as no more snow had fallen. Very icy roads though and less traffic on the roads tonight which is bliss. We'll see what tomorrow brings to London and the suburbs.
Finally it's not as bad as the winter of 1963 which saw us trawling our way through almost 3ft of snow with even higher snow drifts.

A bit like winter really, but with added tabloid sensationalism and dramatic names.

The snow is looking lovely in Worthing this morning but I doubt that it will last long.

Just heard it called hysteria from Siberia on the Beeb!

However, at my local hospital appointment this morning only 3 of us turned up for the gastro clinic.

Had a very pleasant half hour with DR Shammabi discussing life, drug interactions and David Icke.

don't bother with de-icer and scraping. just wipe away thick snow with gloves. fill an empty bottle with hot water and pour all over your car windows. not too hot or windows might shatter.

Re: Beast from the East

I spent my Christmas holidays in 1962/3 on my uncle's farm, about 1800 feet up on the Cats Back above Hay on Wye, where he farmed sheep and Galloway/Welsh Black cross cattle. I loved the farm, it was remote and the mountain was wild. That was a bad winter.
We got snowed in so badly that we couldn't bring the sheep down to the yard as they were in lamb, so we had to carry bales of hay through 6ft of snow up to their pens twice a day. That was the only time I have ever had chilblains. . .
We had a house cow which we hand milked and as she was fed on swedes and mangols the milk was flavoured, I can taste it now from memory.
The house was built in the time of Henry 8th and had huge chimneys, great for fires but the cold came down them in the bedrooms and we scraped ice off the insides of the windows every morning. The dairy was built into the hillside at the back of the house and was always cold, but great for making butter and cheese.
They didnt have mains electricity, it was too remote, we used oil lamps and a generator, sparingly. My aunt made bread, butter, cheese, grew all the fruit and veg needed in the garden, and they kept chickens and pigs for food. I can still remember the day my aunt washed out the cider barrel in the yard and the hens all got drunk on the rinse water she tipped into the stream!
The local roads were blocked with snow to the tops of the hedges and it was a couple of weeks before it cleared enough to leave. In other areas the RAF was drafted in with helicopters to drop feed to stranded animals and boats were used to bring food round to the village where we live now, as the local shop soon ran out of supplies.
The next bad winter I remember was 1981/2 when some schools in S Wales were closed for almost 5 weeks, but as we lived in a town then it wasn't nearly such a challenge. We also had central heating, thank goodness!

Re: Beast from the East

The weather forecasters would be in overdrive if we had another winter like the 62/63 winter. The country comes to standstill with a dusting of snow nowadays.
I can remember the telephone wires stretched so much that they looped almost to the ground with the weight of continual frosts building up on them. The railings on the sea wall around the marine drive were solid with ice for weeks on end. As an apprentice I was glad when there was no more work we could do on the housing site, so we had to go into the joiners shop and make window and door frames ready for use when the thaw came.
At the time I had a little jack Russell dog and myself and a mate were taking a short cut across the golf course as there had been no play on the course for weeks due to the snow. As we walked across the dog saw a rabbit and set off to chase it ( he hadn’t a prayer of ever catching a rabbit ) As the rabbit ran from the dog it did a “chicane “ type dodge, while the dog just kept on a straight line. The dog disappeared under a metre of snow that had filled a bunk, it goes to show how intelligent wild animals are .

I'm in sunny Fife, as I look out of my window it's definitely looking a bit chilly.
Ted has had to be forced out the back door to do what a cat has to do.
