Will EU Articles 11 & 13 Suppress Free Speech?

The EU 'Juri' has waived through new legislation that threatens the internet's Free Speech. Under the guise of protecting Copy-rights the planned legislation would make it almost impossible to repost, links, photos etc, without a very expensive licence which only the big boyz can afford.

Germany & Spain tried before to enforce this but failed, now the EU wants to enforce it across the EU. Tim Berners-Lee amongst others are Not in favour.

"Until now, the so-called E-Commerce Directive has given online platforms broad protection from being subject to copyright penalties when they simply acted as a conduit for user uploads. So if you upload something that is copyrighted, like if you take an image off Google and stick it on Facebook, it’s not their fault. Now, they will be liable. Hence automated systems will delete anything that is copyrighted."

"Why are they doing this? Aside from the potential of individual countries in the EU to decide what is and isn’t news, copyright claims could be used to suppress material for political purposes. If they don’t like a story, it’s no issue to submit a bogus copyright claim.

Users will find that their contributions—including video, audio, text, and even source code—will be monitored and potentially blocked if the automated system detects what it believes to be a copyright infringement. This is going to kill web development! Engineers usually take others’ code and improve on it. That’s how we advance as a society! Innovation!

https://www.ukipdaily.com/the-eu-kil...-if-we-let-it/

"Public domain organisation, the COMMUNIA International Association, says the EU’s measures “stem from an unbalanced vision of copyright as an issue between rightsholders and infringers”, and that the proposal “chooses to ignore limitations and exceptions to copyright, fundamental freedoms, and existing users’ practices”.

Article 13 could "destroy the internet as we know it": What is it, why is it controversial and what will it mean for memes? | Alphr

It's not in legislation yet! If you value your right to Free Speech & access to information, write or email your local MP, MEP.

Maybe they should get their own house in order before laying the law down to its citizens.
Just a disgraceful attitude, the "they work for you" should be changed to "they screw you".

Not only a gagging order but member states will be forced to implement it. Here lies the problem with some things within the EU...........no names make the laws & national politicans take the flak on enforcement.

Thanks for posting that great link Chips

It is indeed far more than just a gagging order. As with most (if not all EU directives/laws/treaty's), these articles are just the tip of the iceberg. Just like the UK joining a 'Common Market' was only a trade-deal...…… No ulterior motives whatsoever just a simple little safeguard...….

The following link is a very short VT that explains very clearly why all of us should be contacting our MEP's to ensure this bill is at least discussed in the EU Parliament & not waived through in private meetings, as will be the case if it's not challenged.

Please don't just shoot the messenger..... I'd be very happy to see news of the main parties view on this subject if any can be found.....

PS: The Green Party are supporting UKIP on this issue. No doubt as another small party they see the possible dangers ahead.
