UK Dancing on Religious Eggshells

Its odd studying UK from a distance through the prism of British media. It seems that everyone is offended by something, and wants to tell the world about it - no more grin and bear it.

This week two stories are blowing up in politicianīs faces: the Labour Party will not do exactly what the Jewish community say, so they want the leader to apologise endlessly and resign. I have read the bits that Labour donīt want to write into their rules, and it looks fair enough to me. But they must capitulate or be branded antisimitic / racist / Nazis, on-and-on. And, if they donīt get exactly what they want many will leave the country and go to live in Israel.

Today, Boris has written an article in support of the Muslim face-covers (re: Denmark problem), and people are lining up to get him to apologise and resign. When probed, it is evident that many of those complaining about Boris have not even read the article he wrote, but that does not stop them being outraged.

One Muslim leader suggested to the radio interviewer that British Christians would be equally upset if Catholic nuns were targeted - he did not believe it when told that nuns were routinely the subject of jokes and humour.

Seems to me that integration is dead and buried.

I also ( because I am a cynic ) have linked the Corbyn business to the back stabbing Blairites in his own ranks, who will do anything to get him out before the next election. I think this Jewish thing will be found to be tied up with them.

I donīt think I would fit in with British life as it is developing. It seems very different to the country I left in 2003 - I suppose all ex-pats say that.

I find myself concurring with you Ian .

The Pro Zionist lobby in the UK seems to be deeply entrenched , in complete contrast to the Islamic lobby that seems not to be represented in politic and the media.

errr, not quite; he said that women who wore the burka and face covers looked like letter boxes.

In an opinion piece published in Monday's Daily Telegraph, the Tory politician and leading figure in a campaign for Britain to leave the European Union said that Muslim women wearing the veils look like "letter boxes" and compared them to "bank robbers".

His comments prompted Muslim groups in the UK to renew calls for an inquiry into Islamophobia in the Conservative Party.

Yes, quite! His article was pointing out that Denmark was wrong to ban such clothing - he was supporting the right to wear what you like. The idea that they look like letter boxes is neither-here-nor-there.

But you miss the thrust of my post, which is that incoming cultures/religions are demanding changes and concessions in a way unrecognisable to British culture.

Re: UK Dancing on Religious Eggshells

Surely British culture has a generally relaxed indeed liberal view re religious beliefs........or at least they used to up until the present govt got into bed with god squad nutters every bit as twisted as the Islam variety

The hypocrisy of Tories objecting to religious intolerance whilst propped up by the Dup is frankly pathetic

Re: UK Dancing on Religious Eggshells

The problem is, its become so/too easy to offend & that goes beyond religion.

Seems to me minority groups are quite happy to offend everyone just to get their points over.

More balloons could be the answer.

There's no muddying the waters on this one Chips

The hypocrisy is breathtaking when we have the Tories in bed with religious bigots- yet complaining about religious bigotry

Re: UK Dancing on Religious Eggshells

Indeed it does

It's disappointing that there's anyone who cannot see the hypocrisy in Tories in bed with such types yet having the gall to condemn such types

Unless of course religious bigotry and divisive hate is only wrong if its the Muslim flavour.....
