Re: 16-year-old gets 4.5 years in prison for kissing 13-year-old

Following on from jaycey’s off toplc memories about men of the cloth and their luggage I’ll spin you all a little yarn about my mothers youngest brother.
My grandfather was a very religious and wealthy American living in Ireland at the turn of the twentieth century. His youngest son was not as rugged and rough and ready as his older siblings and so he was sent off to the Franciscan Brothers. Following his ordination he was sent off as a missionary to the Philippine Islands. He started off in Manila then moved on to Mindanao where he was much feted by the natives.
At the end of 1941 the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked Pearl Harbour which brought America into World War Two. The Japanese then invaded the Philippines and my uncle was placed under house arrest. The natives couldn’t live without their weekly dose of church and used to cover my uncle with a sheet and carry him in a sedan chair to his ornate church. Following the occupation the sedan chair became his main mode of transport until the Yanks provided him with a Jeep and coiffure. Thus began his life of Riley. Every seven years he had a one year furlough and visited NYC and the Mayo Clinic, then on to Rome, Ireland and finally England. In 1959 I picked him up from Heathrow and watched him come through customs. The officer asked him if he had anything to declare, he leaned forward and whispered in his ear. One of the cases was very heavy and when we got home to my mothers house he opened it to reveal a case full of Johnny Walker and packs of Chesterfield. I asked him what he had whispered to the customs officer, he had told him it was full of Holy Water and eucharist’s.

It wasn’t until many years after his death that the story of Catholic Priests and their behaviour came to light. Although I tried to maintain my image of him, I was always left with doubt.
