Re: Missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi

'Mockery of justice’ after Saudis convict eight over Khashoggi killing. Court exonerates crown prince’s inner circle of involvement in murder of dissident journalist.

Saudi Arabia has been accused of engaging in a mockery of justice by shielding the alleged masterminds of the killing of the dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, after a court effectively exonerated Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s inner circle of involvement in the murder.

The gruesome killing in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018 stunned Saudi Arabia’s western allies, plunging the kingdom into its worst diplomatic crisis since the 9/11 attacks.

Five of the 11 officially unidentified men on trial were sentenced to death and three more were handed a combined 24 years in prison, the deputy public prosecutor, Shalaan bin Rajih Shalaan, told reporters in Riyadh on Monday.

The investigation also concluded that Saud al-Qahtani, one of the crown prince’s most trusted advisers, was investigated and found to have no proven involvement in Khashoggi’s death, Shalaan added.

The findings contradict the conclusion of the CIA and other western intelligence agencies that Prince Mohammed directly ordered Khashoggi’s assassination, an allegation the kingdom has strenuously denied. Qahtani, along with 16 other Saudis, was sanctioned by the US last year for his alleged role in the killing.

Shalaan also said “there was no premeditation to kill at the beginning of the mission” – a finding at odds with extensive evidence showing that a 15-man hit squad had arrived in Istanbul with an intention to kill.

Re: Missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi

I agree, the Trials and sentences are a farce, with unknown expendables used to supposedly to expunge SA GUILT ..........

I don't think Turkey's involvement in bringing it to the worlds attention was wholly altruistic but more of self interest after their fall out with SA regime and their alliance with Qatar ...... Nor do I think they factored in that their would be questions where they got all the detailed information. In the end having to admit they had bugged the SA embassy ....

I can imagine there was a flurry of activity around the Foreign Embassy community with wide ranging bug sweeps of their embassies and a review of what secrets or gossip had been discussed openly within their embassies precincts .

It sickens me to the heart to see people accepting their efforts to buy their way back into International acceptance through their 'Sportswashing' and Music washing programmes. Total respect to those men and women who won't be bought.

The Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos had his mobile phone “hacked” in 2018 after receiving a WhatsApp message that had apparently been sent from the personal account of the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, sources have told the Guardian.

Re: Missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi

US intelligence authorities urged British counterparts to keep a close eye on Hatice Cengiz, the fiancee of the murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, after they became aware of a plan by Saudi Arabia to keep her under surveillance in the UK last year, according to western intelligence sources.

Re: Missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Sons of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi FORGIVE his killers meaning those on death row will likely avoid execution.

The sons of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi said Friday they 'forgive' the killers of their father, an announcement analysts said effectively grants clemency to five convicted people on death row.

Khashoggi - a royal family insider turned critic - was killed and dismembered at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, in a case that tarnished the reputation of de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

His family's pardon could spare the lives of five unnamed people sentenced to death over the murder in a December court ruling that exonerated two top aides to the crown prince.

'We the sons of martyr Jamal Khashoggi announce we forgive and pardon those who killed our father,' the Washington Post columnist's son Salah Khashoggi announced on Twitter.

Hmm! So not been coerced by threats or reward just heartfelt forgiveness. Right!

Re: Missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi

I suspect they were give no choice whatsoever. We knew from the beginning that there would be no justice at all, but let's not be naive, nor would there be in the US, or UK.

At least the Canadians are not scared of taking him on
A former senior Saudi intelligence official with close ties to western intelligence agencies has accused Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of plotting to kill him, claiming in a US lawsuit that one such attempt was thwarted by Canadian officials in 2018.
