Plastic bag charges coming to Turkey

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Nov. 13 submitted a draft law to the parliament updating the regulatory regime for packing and waste proposing the ban of free plastic bags at supermarkets. The regulation is planned to be effective as of Jan. 1, 2019.

AKP Deputy Chair Mehmet Muş made a press statement regarding the draft law. He said plastic bags used for packaging in supermarkets would be sold for 25 kuruş (1 Turkish Lira is equal to 100 kuruş).

However, he emphasized the ban on free plastic bags would only be valid for those with a thickness ranging from 15-50 microns, as this is the standard thickness of grocery bags. Any plastic bag with a thickness greater or less than this range will continue to be free of charge.

Muş added that the relevant regulation seeks to decrease the use of customary plastic bags at supermarkets to 90 per person annually by the end of 2019 and to 40 by the end of 2025.

The draft law not only includes a provision on the use of plastic bags, but instead brings many changes to raise the bar higher in Turkey’s fight against waste management.

In line with this, local administrations will be given more detailed tasks supervising efforts for zero waste. For example, it will be obligatory for at least 20 percent of vehicles in the domestic waste collection fleet in every municipality to be capable of collecting packaging waste.

Re: Plastic bag charges coming to Turkey

Yes, yesterday the cashier in Migros asked how many bags I needed, and said they would be charging for them after Xmas.

Re: Plastic bag charges coming to Turkey

Good

I am only disappointed they are not doing a 100% ban as we should in the UK

Plastics pollution is horrific. Just go on any beech in the Antalya region where the hotel isn't having the beech cleaned regularly

Packaging wet wipes and nappies next please.

Re: Plastic bag charges coming to Turkey

It's a start & a good one. The parents need to care about their children dropping sweet wrappings too. Their are some Turkish children on our complex, not only are they noisy but they drop their sweet papers too! If I see them doing it i say yok yok yok !

Re: Plastic bag charges coming to Turkey

In France there are no plastic bags except on the vegi stands. You take your own carrier bags. I cannot understand why all countries don't do this. All this Hu Ha for a very simple law.

Re: Plastic bag charges coming to Turkey

We were in Migros on Friday. The girl on the till got a handful of bags and & whizzed them through the till without asking us if we wanted them luckily I spotted what she was doing and told her I didn't want them as I had my own Migros bag for life. You need to watch 'em !!

Re: Plastic bag charges coming to Turkey

Turkish citizens have come up with novel ways to protest the newly-adopted extra charges for plastic bags, entering supermarkets with donkeys and wheelbarrows.

In the Central Anatolian province of Niğde, a man and a woman rode a donkey into a supermarket and calmly left with it after loading what they shopped.
