Re: Global compact

Makes me wonder what "non-binding" means in this UN agreement. After all if its non-binding, why wouldn't all countries sign up to it, later down the line it could be, thanks but no thanks. Obviously non-binding is not all its cracked up to be all that it means.

Read yesterday that the Belgium government are in such an array over it that their government could fall.............so much for non-binding.

Re: Global compact

Non binding to me is like the European Economic Community, sounded good to start with and then they slowly tweaked it so that years later it was something totally different.

Agreed & you can bet there are a few more hidden gems that leaders past & present have signed all EU citizens up to.
The word transparency should be removed from the dictionary..........

Just an observation but there seemed to be a big discrepancy on looks between refugees making it into Europe & those Rohingya people getting into Bangladesh from Myanmar. Nonetheless, all sad cases.

Re: Global compact

Aye, it will slowly slowly change over the next few years to become totally binding and legal.

Re: Global compact

Ms May has been a bit busy herself this week, so she sent good ole reliable Alistair Burt, to do the deed. This is what he said at the signing:

"ALISTAIR BURT, Minister for State for International Development of the United Kingdom, emphasized that the Global Compact is not legally binding. Rather, as the Secretary-General made clear this morning, it will support international cooperation on migration without affection the sovereignty of States to manage their borders and implement migration policies that respond to their national context. “It is in our interest to keep this dialogue going as we move into the implementation stage,” he said, underscoring the agreement’s commitments vis-ŗ-vis people smuggling, human trafficking and modern slavery. He announced that the United Kingdom will provide £1.88 million across five North African countries for the subregional Cooperation on Migrant Smuggling and Trafficking in Persons Project that will help judicial officials address both scourges. Going forward, the United Kingdom will put a particular focus on supporting international efforts to collect migration data, improvement the management of migration and deliver on the development potential of economic migration."

Re: Global compact

Have you actually read the Global Compact ? paragraph 15 Global Compact presents a non legally binding, but cooperative framework. The Compact also explicitly reaffirms the sovereign right of states to determine their national migration policy and their prerogative to govern migration within their jurisdiction.

It will also not police or enforce the behavior or actions of signatory countries but is, designed to stimulate change and encourage innovative solutions on migration .

You only need to look at the opposition against the Global Compact and its anti migrant nature to understand if your far right you will not like this new initiative as it hopefully also wants to put down pressure to stop the sensationalist non evidential Press/Internet reporting on migrants ... which has been the life blood which generates support and a platform for the far right parties in Europe.
