Welcome to England

A block of hardened fat, oil and wet-wipes longer than six double-decker buses has been discovered in a sewer metres from the sea in a popular Devon resort town.

What I don't get is how can it be 'metres from the sea' don't they treat sewage in a proper facility in Sidmouth, before they discharge it?

Re: Welcome to England

It could actually have been on its way to the treatment centre, the fact that it was metres from the sea doesn't mean it was being discharged immediately

Presumably there'd be fast food businesses along the sea front discharging into the sewer?

Good point there, but there is an implication in the article that it could have been a danger to bathers.

Re: Welcome to England

This is awful news. Totally unnecessary. If only people would just do the right thing. No oil or fat down the drain, nothing but human waste down the loos. The take aways have a lot to answer for, and if found guilty should be very heavily fined.

Re: Welcome to England

Yes, the fat and oil certainly could I.A. but so much easier for the take aways to just pour it down their kitchen sink/drain !

Re: Welcome to England

I have, hand on heart, never put fat or oil down the sink. I always have empty coffee jars that I pour this into. Our local tip has provisions for disposing of old oil and fat.

Having said that, I suppose to a certain extent, I must be guilty. I am sure washing up water must contain certain amounts of fat, oil or grease. But - what can you do? I do try and wipe up excess before washing, with kitchen roll which goes in my bin.

As for wet wipes - don't use these very often and then again I put them in the bin.
