Re: Breaking News

Breaking news it seems after the local elections Turkeys ruling party is going to allow unrestricted construction around the nature park at Lake Salda known as the Maldives of Turkey due to the silver sands and crystal blue water. If you ever get the chance worth the visit or was.
To some known as the Blue Lake believed to contain healing minerals for skin diseases.it is at Yesilova district in Burdur two and half hours drive from Antalya .....

People have seen in the past what this type of construction does example Uzungl beside Black sea coast outside Trabzon

Re: Breaking News

These type of building collapses are common it seems in Turkey, normally comes to light in earthquakes or breaks in soft groundworks .. especially in buildings that have shop premises on the ground floor ( as this one had ) ... it seems to gain more floor space or extend, some remove some of the infill walls weakening the structure of the ground floor, or take out solid walls to make shopfronts reducing the stiffness of the building making the ground floor a "soft storey" we shall see after investigation ... 1 dead so far and unrecovered others....

Re: Breaking News - 8-story building in Istanbul collapsed

Yes, Enoch I have seen on my visits and when talking to Turkish friends and expats in Istanbul of "his" use of this new Law to enrich his developer friends like his family friend the guy that is never off Turkish TV with adverts of his new developments Ali Agaoglu

The law it seems is being used and is involved in many of the multi billion urban transformation projects across Istanbul. Sites he and his cronies in power have designated as sitting on what he calls an earthquake “risk zones ” or at "risk homes".

The problem it seems is that many of the old time residents of the sites deemed at risk , must go to the municipality to acquire the title deed that would show them officially owners of the property. (for some never needed before as classed as long term Gecekondu with rights legalized by the Govt) Only with the deed does it allow them to have his home rebuilt as part of the regeneration project. Although Gecekondu status is being accepted many can't afford the fee's to get the permissions and title so lose their homes to developers ....

Even the ones that have the correct permissions these communities are being split and shipped to the new homes in blocks in the Istanbul suburbs, their neighbourhoods are then demolished and replaced by new structures used for office ,malls or middle east investors homes.

The middle class also having problems ... if the building they live the majority vote for demolition the minority have to agree and move from areas they have lived in all their lives as their homes are demolished ..

Some of the problems of the law ... made worse by the economic crisis once demolished many of the small speculator developers have run out of money to rebuild and rehouse in new....

Lake Salda is stunning. We considered buying a piece of land on the edge of the lake about 20 years ago. In the end we thought that it was just too isolated for us. We still enjoy travelling past though.

Re: Breaking News - 8-story building in Istanbul collapsed

As a retired property professional I doubt with, the the amnesty on illegal builds we have seen the last of these sorts of problems.
If a developer neglected to obtain the proper consents why would one assume a building was constructed to the correct specification?
Similarly if works were undertaken to an existing build without consents, as a previous poster has intimated, why would one assume the person carrying out the work had any idea what he was doing?
