Reintroduce weekly waste collections

Town hall chiefs will be forced to reintroduce weekly food waste collections as the Tories begin their defence of thousands of council seats.

Firing the starting gun on campaigning for local elections in England, Environment Secretary Michael Gove is taking aim at the hated fortnightly collections that lead to flies and maggots infesting household bins.

In a package of voter-friendly measures to be unveiled this week, Mr Gove will demand that all English councils collect food waste weekly. He would also require all councils in England to provide a free green waste collection for households with gardens.

At present, almost two-thirds of councils charge for the discretionary service, and Mr Gove’s measure could save householders more than 100 million every year.

In a bid to embarrass Labour and the SNP, which run garbage collection services in Wales and Scotland respectively, Mr Gove is to outlaw three and four-weekly bin collections, which the devolved administrations have allowed.

A Tory source said the proposed reforms will deliver on a pledge by former Local Government Minister Eric Pickles before the 2010 General Election that stated: ‘It’s a basic right for every English man and woman to be able to put the remnants of their chicken tikka masala in their bin without having to wait a fortnight for it to be collected.’

My bin here is emptied every two days, rain or shine.

Food waste? get a dog. Ours is removed every day by our huskies.

Bloody nightmare here

We have 5 seperate collection types and " chipped" waste bins bring hellfire and damnation to those putting wrong type of waste in wrong container

It's also a nightmare in London. When the joggers run by some often drop their water bottle in the wrong bin. Some doggy walkers put their bag of waste in the wrong bin. All hell gets let loose because those bins won't be emptied.
Over the years I've complied with recycling but have now had enough of this although the rats can't get enough so as recycling is not compulsory in my area it now all goes in one bin. Which is allowed. Doesn't make sense to me at all. Some say the recycled rubbish all goes to one place anyway.
Many people then drop their rubbish in the bus stop bins and street bins. Then the councils are removing waste as they should do.
This fortnightly collection has been one of the biggest council con because invariably it turns into a monthly collection due to contamination problems.
In Turkey it's wonderful having a collection daily. Hope that continues.

What's wrong with putting the food waste bags in your compost bin? - assuming you have a garden.

Our compost bins if you mean the wheelie type get contaminated often by other people dumping stuff in them. If you mean a garden compost heap we can't do that because the rat population has over thrived on it and are getting into some neighbours houses. It's a bad situation all round.

Re: Reintroduce weekly waste collections

No cooked food should be put into compost bins. It depends on what we are referring too by 'food waste'

No, I mean our own compost maker in our own garden. All the fruit and veg peelings make lovely compost for the garden. We dont waste cooked food in this house; leftovers get used up or frozen, and I generally have a menu worked out for several days. Our local fox occasionally gets lucky if I'm feeling lazy, but from the look of him he's doing pretty well without my donations! A trip to the shops is a minimum 20 mile round trip where we live, and I dont fancy other folk choosing my food purchases so I dont buy online groceries either.
The daftest thing I ever saw was the lady who had ordered 4 packs of Country Life butter and got 4 identical Country Life magazines instead.
