I had just returned from Istanbul a week earlier. I knew quite a few who were affected by it.

Re: On This Day..

God bless Manchester.

Two hundred years ago today

The Peterloo Massacre

On the 16th of August eighteen nineteen.
Occurred the blackest tragedy the city'd ever seen
It happened at St Peters Square, then called Peters field
It started the Manchester Guardian, the facts have been revealed

60,000 peaceful folk were asking for democracy
Universal suffrage and ways to end their poverty
Less than two% of them had voting as a right
They gathered there to demonstrate and not to stand and fight

The corn laws were oppressive and the common folk were starving
They only wanted reform and an extra couple of farthings
With dignity and discipline they stood for the oration
With banners marked with "Peace and Love and Equal Representation"

Set against the ragged throng were 600 hussars
Several hundred infantrymen, been drinking in the bars
400 constables in reserve, drinking beer to calm their nerves
Henry Hunt was the main speaker, stood before the freedom seekers

Yeoman Captain Hugh Birley, feeling brave and looking surly
And Major Thomas Trafford too, to do the worst that he could do
They kettled the people on the field, cavalry charged, wounds unhealed
18 people dead and gone, cut by sabres in the sun

700 citizens badly hurt, lying bleeding in the dirt
Yeomanry led by Guy L'Estrange, killed some kids, was he deranged?
By two pm it was all done, journalists arrested to keep them schtum
Speakers arrested for high treason, The Prince Regent for his own reasons

Congratulated the killers of course, God save the King and military force
Hussars and magistrates cleared of guilt, on the spot now statues built
From this came the Chartist Movement, and trade unions brought improvement
