Shocking Report

Landmark study links Tory austerity to 120,000 deaths

The Conservatives have been accused of “economic murder” for austerity policies which a new study suggests have caused 120,000 deaths.

The paper found that there were 45,000 more deaths in the first four years of Tory-led efficiencies than would have been expected if funding had stayed at pre-election levels.

On this trajectory that could rise to nearly 200,000 excess deaths by the end of 2020, even with the extra funding that has been earmarked for public sector services this year.

Real terms funding for health and social care fell under the Conservative-led Coalition Government in 2010, and the researchers conclude this “may have produced” the substantial increase in deaths.

Is austerity really to blame for stalling life expectancy in England?
The paper identified that mortality rates in the UK had declined steadily from 2001 to 2010, but this reversed sharply with the death rate growing again after austerity came in.

From this reversal the authors identified that 45,368 extra deaths occurred between 2010 and 2014, than would have been expected, although it stops short of calling them "avoidable".

Based on those trends it predicted the next five years - from 2015 to 2020 - would account for 152,141 deaths - 100 a day - findings which one of the authors likened to “economic murder”.

Re: Shocking Report

The article is from 2017, and does not prove cause and effect - people die under Labour too; assuming it is right, for the sake of argument, how have the figures gone since the study was done? Have their predictions/forecast materialised? By the way, I can't see a date on the final release of the paper.

Immac, that would be just silly to suggest people don't die under Labour hence no mention, nor have they anything to do with this independent report on the consequences of Austerity, a Tory policy which Labour wasn't part, nor were they in power during the report timeline. So equally as silly IMHO..... to in some way try to tag them onto it ... in some political tit for tat .....

The report findings in 2017 was by the BMJ British Journal of Medicine a credible source of scientific articles and findings.

You ask how the figures have gone, it seems similar to the report direction in trend, maybe a little slower as the recent Government has softened and thrown money at the the edges of Austerity (that itself seems to point to the credibility of report and realization by the Tories ) ...but still terrible deaths attributed to the policy ( last weeks report Sat 1 Jun 2019 15.35 BST by the IPPR on the continuing trend of deaths due to Tory policy of Austerity LINK below)

Austerity to blame for 130,000 ‘preventable’ UK deaths – report

Sat 1 Jun 2019 15.35 BST

eg ....Despite promises made during the NHS’s 70th birthday celebrations last year to prioritise prevention, the UK is now only halfway up a table of OECD countries on its record for tackling preventable diseases.

Re: Shocking Report

Some seem to forget it was Brown's government that caused the Tory austerity implementation. Typical of Labour destroying the economy then the Tories having to take unpopular measures to rebuild.

Not forgotten. .... on what was a global economic crisis, a economic malaise that besieged the West from the eurozone to the US and beyond ........Labour's fault for the world crisis? debatable ... even dye in the wool Tories after 9 years of Tory rule don't use this overplayed redundant excuse anymore (without being laughed off the doorstep)

The distraction doesn't get away from the results of the report on a policy picked by the Tories "Austerity"..... Chosen by the Tories, when there was alternatives to this policy. Ones without the same devastating consequences, but the Austerity policy suited the Tories in helping it to implement its rightwing ideology across the board ... in doing so hitting the poorest in society in Welfare and NHS etc and it has come to bear with an up swing in avoidable deaths.

How is that rebuild promise going Alva ? ...did the Austerity meet what was promised ? How many revision of targets to meet the reality ??? Why did one of the Tory architects of the policy resign and slam the policy as too far ? .....attacking the austerity programme for dividing society by balancing the books on the backs of the poor and vulnerable .

eg Attempted suicides by disability benefit claimants in PIP system more than double after introduction of fit to work assessment.

Re: Shocking Report

Unsurprising that health problems are linked to austerity.

What is surprising is that so many voted for more of it

11 years sustained growth under Gordon Brown, don't believe, me google it, the issue was the Thatcher Reagan neo liberalization of the financial markets, you won't find that in the beano.
