Re: TV licence

I’m fed up with paying for a TV licence when I'm in Turkey for most of the time and I can’t watch BBC when I’m not in England without a VPN. Why can’t you just put in your licence number to access BBC? Not difficult.

Re: TV licence

The tax is not only for the bbc...

Reclassification as a tax Edit
In January 2006, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) changed the classification of the licence fee from a service charge to a tax.[12] Explaining the change the ONS said: "in line with the definition of a tax, the licence fee is a compulsory payment which is not paid solely for access to BBC services. A licence is required to receive ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, satellite, or cable". A briefing paper from the House of Commons Library described the licence fee as a hypothecated tax (i.e. one raised for a particular defined purpose).[13]

They are trying to develop a secure system to stop people thieving the content.

Would probably be a better system but would likely leave those struggling behind, like Sky. Virgin and BT TV.

Re: TV licence

No 10 tells BBC licence fee will be scrapped

“Downing Street turned on the BBC last night — vowing to scrap the television licence fee and make viewers pay a subscription. The national broadcaster could also be compelled to downsize and sell off most of its radio stations.

In a plan that would change the face of British broadcasting, senior aides to the prime minister insisted that they are “not bluffing” about changing the BBC’s funding model and “pruning” its reach into people’s homes…

Re: TV licence

Thank you Mr Jaycey. That news is what the vast majority of people have been waiting to hear for a very long time. If the BBC is as good as they say it is, there will be no problem in people willing to pay for a first class and unbiased service without the threat of going to jail if you don't pay.

Re: TV licence

When a student in the UK I remember being incensed at having to pay 3 quid for a licence & I understand that it might even have gone up since then.

Coincidentally, that is how much the licence fee is going up by in April 2020.

Maisie

PS. The licence cost £3.00 from June 1954. You are giving your age away Jaycey!
