Re: Iranian Tanker boarded by UK Marines

Now the news is on the back burner, sex scandals dominating the headlines now, different language is surfacing re the Iranian Tanker siezure by UK forces

EU sanction law applied to a Non EU member possibly selling oil to another Non EU member ?
It has only happened once, maybe never again

The Iranian siezed vessel, Stena Impero’s owners have said its 23 personnel on board have been properly treated by the Iranians since their capture.

The initial British capture of Grace 1 was always regarded as controversial, both politically and legally.

The Foreign Office faced private criticism that its decision to back a move to enforce EU sanctions in such a novel way was always likely to lead to an Iranian reaction just as the Iran nuclear deal was coming under such pressure. Iran, responding to the mounting US economic sanctions, has withdrawn from aspects of the nuclear deal covering the limits on enriching uranium and its stockpiles of uranium.

It was the first time the UK had enforced the EU embargo on oil sales to Syria in this way.

The UK acknowledged it had acted after pressure from the US, including intelligence that the boat was carrying oil bound for the regime of President Assad. It was also a surprise to the UK that Grace 1 strayed from international into Gibraltarian waters, so making the capture of the ship possible.

There have also been legal question marks over whether the seizure was compliant with international law, since Iran was not subject to the EU-imposed embargo, but many experts said the port to which the ship was bound [suspected] was a sanctioned entity, and therefore the UK act was lawful under EU law.

Talks between Iranian officials and the Foreign Office conducted in London last month failed to resolve the crisis after the UK demanded assurances that the ship’s cargo would not proceed to Syria. Iran insisted that it had a right to sell oil to Syria or any other country it wished.

Are we becoming Yankee Yap dogs, maybe even already are?

Re: Iranian Tanker boarded by UK Marines

Indeed, a fine analogy, no doubt the USA had the best interests of the UK and EU in mind when they applied pressure.

This is how our new partnership with the US will look like says Boris.

Oh, I get it, EU sanctions--that dog wont hunt, so we drop that, dont mention it again, and we pretend that it was International Sanctions, well I mean the USA and Iran are nothing to do with the EU so, needs be for a Goalpost move.

Re: Iranian Tanker boarded by UK Marines

Its now in the Courts of Gibraltar, with judgement today, if to release or continue detention .... The Gibraltar Govt have said its decisions concerning the Grace 1 are “not at all based on extraneous political considerations”. Who believes that ???? a quiet deal will be done .....

It is easy seen there is strong pressure being applied on the UK to get behind the US, on breaking the Obama agreement between the West and Iran. ...

So far we have sided with the Europeans in trying hard to keep the agreement intact ....

So it will be interesting to see how BORIS reacts to this new US pressure by his new BFF ....... As he was the Foreign Secretary at the time, projecting to the US, the UK's opposition to Trump's abandonment of the Iran nuclear deal.

But the pressure is now on, as it seems this fabulous support and promise of US/UK Trade Deal to help after a "no deal Brexit" may actually contain strings, dependent on the UK Foreign policy coming into alignment with Trumps opposition to the Iran agreement ...... Trump is America first will Boris act on UK interests whatever they are, or act as he did as our Foreign Secretary .

There isnt an ounce of sincerity in the Schpeil Boris comes out with, he will contradict himself within days and deny he meant what he said originally, sounds a lot like Trump really.

If that tanker was shipping oil to Syria, should it have been stopped?

Who's law and jurisdiction do you apply, Iran is not party to EU or USA sanctions, which the UK and the EU are in breach of at this moment.
Russia and China supplies Syria, will we be arresting their ships and planes anytime soon.

We are not at war with either Syria or Iran last I looked.

The USA just doesnt want anyone buying Irans oil, it's nowt to do with Syria.

Add to that that US wishes to isolate UK from EU traditional allies. Pandering to trump will always be a risk. He will insist that we follow his foreign policy ideals or else. Or else being the only card trump has up his little sleeves, 'trade sanctions' there are no free lunches and a 'special trade deal' with trump would always be my idea of a nightmare. A car that may or may not start when you set out to work in the morning.
