MPs back abortion and same-sex marriage in NI

Westminster MPs have voted overwhelmingly to extend same-sex marriage and access to abortion to Northern Ireland.

The devolved Northern Ireland government at Stormont collapsed in 2017, and repeated talks have failed to repair the breach. Under the amendments approved by the Commons, the changes will come into effect if a new power-sharing executive has not been created by 21 October, the date by which Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley must call a new election.

Re: MPs back abortion and same-sex marriage in NI

It was good to see an Irish born English MP bring forward a bill for change, bringing NI into line with the mainland, on laws on Abortion and same Sex Marriage and out of the medieval clutches of the Catholic and Presbyterian Bigots within these churches who are against .

The narrow minded bigots in the DUP will have to accept they are now in the 21st Century with laws to match ..... maybe Arlene Foster should remember what she said as Arlene Kelly in 1992 when describing the then Eire constitution as being "riddled with Roman Catholic social and political doctrine".

"A few examples include the Republic's stand on divorce and abortion; and the place given to women in the 1937 Constitution is downright insulting,"

That she is now defending the similar in the North.

If the DUP can accept their first openly gay politician standing for them ... then this should be the next step.....

Shame on NI elected representatives putting their own party interests before the electorate's and still draw their salaries ......

Maybe now a challenge for the Republican Nationalists to get their finger out and negotiate a reopening of the assembly and actually serve their electorate rather than what they see as a foreign power having to do their job for them from Westminster ...

Re: MPs back abortion and same-sex marriage in NI

Whilst your rant is riddled with inaccuracies I will highlight just one which a better man than me pulled up the British on many years ago

The people of the North of Ireland already live on our mainland

( Lol I currently live on the Valencian mainland!)

Re: MPs back abortion and same-sex marriage in NI

The reason the dysfunctional corrupt assembly collapsed-again-was the denial of rights and Unionist/ British intransigence

The British failed to deliver what was agreed at St Andrews whilst their sidekicks continued their corruption, ( Red Sky NAMA, RHI etc etc ) sectarianism and abuse of power in the Sham on the hill

Absolutely sod all to do with Republicans either inside or outside Stormont

Please try and at least get your facts slightly straight before you blunder about making a fool of yourself

Meanwhile any Republican worth their salt couldnt care less if the symbol of occupation and corruption never opened its doors again

Re: MPs back abortion and same-sex marriage in NI

The inimitable Brian Feeney yet again sums it up perfectly

Todays Irish News

Another pointless lap in the talks circuit runs into the buffers. How many circuits has that been since 2017? Answer: one.

It’s a hamster wheel. It’s like one of Zeno’s paradoxes to demonstrate that motion is an illusion or the belief that anything has changed is mistaken. You could say that the existence of the DUP is irrefutable proof of that.

You can have as many sessions of talks as you like – as you’ve read here before, they’re not called negotiations – but the simple truth is that as long as the British government is in hock to the DUP there will be no progress.

Here’s the sequence of events for the next couple of months. The ancient and decrepit Conservative members select Boris Johnson as prime minister. He then appoints a couple of people to negotiate with the DUP who will sell themselves in return for supporting whatever daft Brexit arrangement he comes up with and voting confidence in his government. The wording of the new deal will be almost exactly the same as the current one with Theresa May’s government, including the DUP promising to support the Good Friday Agreement. Yes, go on, read it.

It may be the same wording, give or take, but it will make no change here. In fact it blocks change. It does the opposite of supporting the Good Friday Agreement which has at its heart the concepts of equality of status, parity of esteem exemplified by ‘rigorous impartiality’ in how both communities here are treated. However those aspects have been ditched by the coalition and Conservative governments since 2010 in ever increasing specifics, not least by sending a succession of overtly unionist proconsuls. They weren’t able to state their bias explicitly when they were here, but subsequently they have gone overboard, stating their commitment to the union at every opportunity.

In the last couple of years the emphasis has been on the damage to the north-south aspects of the Good Friday Agreement, the all-Ireland economy and the injury Brexit causes to people’s rights. However, the more lasting and fundamental damage has been done to devolution. We know now that the DUP was traducing the principles of devolved administration before 2017; we don’t need to rehearse RHI, Red Sky, Nama, anti-Irish cultural decisions and so on. The bottom line is that they refused to operate devolution in good faith. There were no party injunctions to do so.

Since 2010 British governments have aided and abetted the DUP by favouring their requests and requirements, the first being the abolition of 50:50 recruiting to the PSNI. In the last two years this bias has visibly increased as what passes for leadership in unionism shifted to Westminster. Why would the MPs want to do themselves out of power and influence by a self-denying ordinance? The DUP has simply ignored the useless proconsuls and applied straight to Theresa May’s chief of staff in Downing Street. Furthermore, as a party, the DUP is not keen to return to Stormont since they are a minority and even worse, another election and all subsequent elections will reinforce that minority status.

It’s customary among the commentariat to blame Sinn Fin for the failure to return to Stormont, but the inescapable truth is that the DUP’s behaviour caused the collapse of Stormont, and now in the last two years has called into question whether a devolved administration can work here at all. If unionists won’t work it, what’s the point of it? Sinn Fin didn’t want it in 1998. Why would they want it in 2019 when the Westminster arithmetic that has polluted politics could be repeated at any time in the future?

The DUP’s intransigence, backed up by stupid, ignorant English politicians has begun to lead many people to ask is change possible or has Project Norn Irn run its course?

Re: MPs back abortion and same-sex marriage in NI

Republican Nationalists and the DUP seem more than happy to see a minority not receive the same rights of either the South nor those rights seen on the British mainland.

With Northern Irish woman suffering the same indignities as they did in the South till Westminster it seems change these medieval laws for them ........... their representative on both sides don't seem interested.

Whilst the the two major parties have done nothing but bicker ...but not when it comes to drawing their salaries ... It is a sad indictment of the Assembly, that Westminster felt the need to act. The only people disrespecting devolution are those elected.

You mention no Republican "Nationalist" "couldn't care less if the symbol of occupation and corruption never opened its doors again".... but happy it seems to take the coin. In salaries.

I ask what have the DUP Or the Republican Nationalist done for their electorate on Abortion or Same Sex marriage ?????

Re: MPs back abortion and same-sex marriage in NI

Again you make a fool of yourself

Republicans of various parties and groupings have been to the forefront for decades on human rights issues including equal marriage rights gay rights etc

It has consistently been the Dup/ Unionist Party and their British backers who deny rights in the North

Do you not know ANY of the history of this unjust statelet????

Do you know anything of gerrymandering?

1 man 1 vote ?

Sectarian housing policies?

Anti Irish culture management?

Every single one of those injustices including more yet to be settled- inflicted on us by your British backed unonists

The fact you even fumble the most basic facts says it all!!!!

Spend a few hours googling and come back when you have a basic grasp of the struggle for rights in the North

Why is it called the United Kingdom. Separate rules for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Could we not have an English Parliament?
