Erdogan says itís unacceptable that Turkey canít have nuclear weapons

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday it was unacceptable for nuclear-armed states to forbid Ankara from obtaining its own nuclear weapons, but did not say whether Turkey had plans to obtain them, Reuters reports.

ďSome countries have missiles with nuclear warheads, not one or two. But (they tell us) we canít have them. This, I cannot accept,Ē he told his ruling AK Party members in the eastern city of Sivas.

ďThere is no developed nation in the world that doesnít have them,Ē Erdogan said. In fact, many developed countries do not have nuclear weapons.

Turkey signed the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty in 1980, and has also signed the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, which bans all nuclear detonations for any purpose.

Erdogan hinted that he wanted the same protection for Turkey as Israel.

ďWe have Israel nearby, as almost neighbours. They scare (other nations) by possessing these. No one can touch them.Ē

Foreign analysts say Israel possesses a sizable nuclear arsenal. Israel maintains a policy of ambiguity around the nuclear issue, refusing to confirm or deny its capabilities.

Having spent time at Pelindaba - the South African nuclear development center - there were probably more Israeli scientists working there than there were Safricans. I have no doubt but that Israel has nuclear capability.

Israel is surrounded by hostile nations and imo it is only nuclear capability that has kept those countries at bay.

In theory I agree with RTE, if India and Pakistan have got them, and number one raving-looney can get his tiny hands on a button, then why not Turkey?

Following that argument just about every nation on earth could be justified in having nuclear weapons. Why then should Trump deny that nice Mr Kim the right to nuclear capability?

Imagine close on 200 nuclear nations, many run by megalomaniacs, what could possibly go wrong?

Reminds me, really must finish that fall out shelter in the garden.

Its a crazy world but its the only one we have

Re: Erdogan says itís unacceptable that Turkey canít have nuclear weapons

He may want one, but many in Turkey wouldn't .... It would be and is the start of an arms race in an region not known for restraint or forethought before acting . With rulers and regimes that put their own grip on power before their own people's well being.
